Seating depth - does it even matter?

It's the greatest variance I've seen as well. I've done a decent amount of testing recently and I believe seating depth makes a measurable difference in at least some gun/ammo combinations. The main test rifle is a .223 Howa with the factory Stocky stock topped off with a Nightforce NXS...

Seating depth - does it even matter?

I did a seating depth test today with my CZ527 American in .17 Hornet. The scope is an old Leupold Vari X III 6.5-20x40 EFR. The load is Hornady brass, Hornady 15.5 gr NTX bullet, CCI 400 primer and VV N120 powder. Velocity is approximately 3975 fps. The range was 99.7 yards fired off of a...

    Barrel length question 6.5 PRC

Mine has a 22" barrel. The load is 2815 fps with Berger 156 EOL's and VV N568. It stays supersonic to over 1300 yards.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

This is a very interesting thread! I'm looking forward to the reports of the use of .223's on grizzlies and brown bears to come in. That would really be something if they worked reliably. It would be great if all you needed was a .223 for anything in North America. Based on my own experience I'm...

    Vapor trail

Good shot! I'd say about 575 yards.

.223 for bear, mountain goat, deer, elk, and moose.

Congratulations on a fine bull! Can you give more info on the rifle, and load? I have a Kimber Adirondak in .300 Blackout that I'm having rebarrelled to .223 AI for an ultralight setup. I'll be using a modified magazine box and ejector to load to 2.40" OAL. I'm looking for more info. Which...

    Horseback daypack

I think your Metcalf is too large. You'd be better off with something smaller.

    Who's hunting sheep soon?

Heading in at the end of August for 25 days. My 3rd attempt at a stone ram. It's going to be a blast!

    Reload Chambering Issue

Yes, try running the cases through the body die set for about .002" shoulder bump first. That should fix the problem.

    Reload Chambering Issue

Are you neck sizing, or full length sizing?

What piece of gear do you wish existed?

I like these highly accurate and lightweight rifles that are available nowadays. What I would like to see available to compliment them is an equally lightweight scope, but which is specifically designed with the long range hunter in mind. It would have to be in the 9 to 12 ounce range with a...

    Ultralight horse packing

What kind of supplemental feed are people packing in? There is oats, barley, sweet feed, dairy rations, alfalfa cubes or pellets. On my last 11 day trip I gave them 1 can of dairy rations each daily. I'm just wondering what you guys use.

    3W wood stove reviews?

For my style of hunting. I want a camp that is easy and fast to set up and take down, so I'm going with the Winnerwell Fastfold stove. https://winnerwell.us/products/winnerwell-fastfold-titanium-tent-stove

    6.5-06 Ackley Dies

I have a Redding type S FL .280 AI die and use it for 6.5-06 AI. Obviously the expander ball cannot be used because it's for .280, but with the right bushing, and no expander, it works great for 6.5-06 AI. You could buy a separate 6.5 expander, if you wanted to use it that way though.

    Ultralight horse packing

I can definitely see the advantages of only having two animals versus three. Where I'm going in 2021 for sheep is about 65 kms (40 miles) in, with up to 19 days available for the trip. With my Percheron/QH cross packing, I suppose it's doable even if coming out with meat. The problem would be...

    Ultralight horse packing

That's what I'm geared up for. I have 3 horses. One is for riding, another for packing, and the third to bring out the meat. They can each be ridden or packed, so their duties can be alternated. The way I see it, less horses equals less trouble and less work. My hunting strategy is to carry a...

How long to leave horses unattended

This is why I'm thinking tied to a tree with a breakaway line, with 3-leg hobbles, and a bell. That way if they get spooked, then go around the tree to where all the slack in the rope gets wound up, they'll be able to break away, instead of injuring themselves in panic. With the 3-leg hobbles...
