Anyone reloading for bear defense?
I tested 255gr Cast Performance WFN and 240gr XTP against back to back Elk knuckles. They penetrated and stayed together. I also tested 240gr Oregon Trail SWC - they exited in pieces. It is hard to do gel penetration tests as the WFN usually penetrate 5+ feet (from other testing I've seen). You... -

The consequences of a slight error are far greater at 470yds than at 200yds. That and using primer popping reloads. -

lever gun pressure signs to look for?
There are no reliable "pressure signs" with the 45-70 Marlin. So stick to published load data. H4198 if you can find it. And definitely get ahold of the bullet manufacturer for load data. If you have a chronograph, stay at or below 2000fps for 300gr from an 18.5". I've been loading for a guide... -

Holster set up for SW 329 for bear country during archery
I use a belt holster attached to my pack with pouch keepers for the gun to ride on my pack. Just a thought. -
329 PD problem
I'm going to guess that the lube is what froze. The trigger doesn't have much leverage turning the cylinder - doesn't take much to bind it. I carry mine in a top flap nylon holster from a company called AMS out in Colorado - about $25.
