Hunting with my Blaser R8 is perfectly safe with one in the chamber as the safety is a de-cocker and the rifle cannot shoot without being cocked with the thumb safety. I hunt with one in the chamber as the rifle is almost always in my hand and sometimes I need a quick shot, especially if in...
I have used SHV 3-10x42s for years and they have dialed for me out to 800+yards reliably. I even used one a couple weeks back in a hunting comp and dialed all day without any issues.
A hunting mate of mine that guides a lot uses a .260 with 123 SSTs and thinks it's the best killing combo he's used for clients. Soft recoil and drops animals immediately.
Yeah it's a risk and will lead to tears. I have never altered any trigger on any rifle I've owned. I just figure that the Sako/Tikka engineers know more about their rifles than I do and trust their judgement.
I have shot Sako/Tikka rifles for many many years. Again I say the only time I've ever...
I use the MOAR reticle on a couple SHVs and it's fine for most situations. I like it much more than the MIL-R reticle because the MOAR has a continuous line without gaps and simple hashes. Stadia to edges is thicker and easy to see.
The Tikka T3 borrows heavily from the Sako TRG design (which Sako got when they bought Tikka). The closed action goes a long way towards keeping debris out, and making the action stiffer. The smooth bolt keeps debris out of the bolt lugs and the angled lugs do not pack snow/debris in easily...
I used Zeiss HD5 scopes in the past that had locking windage/elev turrets that you pulled up to unlock, and pushed back down to lock. The ergos on them are awesome and much faster than other designs I've used like the Leupold.
If you can stretch it, or find used, a Nightforce 3-10x42 is hard to beat and a really tough and reliable scope for all hunting and even longer range dialing.
I don't know what it is with that bullet, but yeah it's just dynamite. I still have 900+ of them. Makes me want to get a .308 load working with them again.
It was that 178 AMAX and 155 Scenar that got me to just stop using hunting bullets altogether.
This was the first match bullet I used for hunting after a recommendation from a user Scenarshooter on another forum 10+ years ago now. It was the match bullet I used in comps so I figured why not try it. First red deer I hit it just solidly poleaxed. I stopped using hunting bullets after that...
Not the ELDX, but I used the 178 AMAX in 308 (now ELD-M) in the past. They were by far the most devastating bullet I ever used on game. They are highly fragmenting and liquefy internals. I hit a coyote once in the chest and the front half of it was just...missing. Small bits everywhere. I never...
Again I state there are two primary lead contamination areas hunters need to think about:
1) Lead in game meat. (low)
2) Lead in primers. (high)
Lead in primers is by far the bigger issue and likely where most lead exposure will happen. It is in a form that can be easily absorbed and many...
