I don't recall seeing them around the lake. But they had been about 5 miles back in the wilderness. They had grazed some areas down to the dirt and left fields of poop there.

I've called in 4 here in Cali. All but one bugled.
I've killed dozens of bulls in Co, eastern OR, and Idaho. The Rosie's are just monsters. Huge.
We get to hunt them here with a rifle in Sept. So shot distances can vary. All have been around 75 yards or less.

That's actually a great idea.
I typically just scrub mine thoroughly with a brush and soap. I get the big stuff but then just put it back into the sheath and wait for the next kill.

You don't necessarily need to go where you are hunting. But getting it as real as it can be with 2 overnights will give you a good idea of what worked and what didn't.

My dad likes unique types of knives and other gadgets and enjoys the random gift. At 74, he would enjoy getting something we can use to clean and quarter one of our animals this next fall.

For archery in warm weather I try to get close to 40 lbs of total pack weight, not including my weapon. For cold weather, I want to be around 45 lbs, maybe a few more depending on how long I'll be gone and the weather I expect.
I can carry quite a bit more and doing so all day isn't an issue...
And even the realities of meat care from someone who has done it. I see people freaking out about this all the time and it's really not that complicated.

Discuss necessities and then drill in the importance of trying these things out prior to season. Maybe a brief hike, or not, and an overnight in the tent, bag, pad etc that they will be using. Gets them to try their gear...
