While grizzlies, mountain lions, lightning, and crazed mountain men might top most peoples’ list of things to fear in the backcountry, mine is getting bucked off a horse.
While rodeo cowboys land in sandy soft soil with clowns to help them up, deer hunters land in rocks on 30 degree slopes often with no one around. Getting bucked off a horse in the mountains is a very dangerous situation. You should take all precautions to minimize this risk. Here’s one of my techniques to make sure I come home in one piece.
