As I write in my new book, “Hunting Big Mule Deer,” you can drastically improve your chances at taking a big mule deer by scouting. While you can scout anytime prior to the season for pre-rut bucks, I think the best months are July and August. It’s then that the biggest mule deer are using the most open portions of their range, increasing your chances of actually seeing them (which really increases your ability to focus your hunting efforts.)
I recently filmed a multi-day scouting trip in the high country. Over the next week, I’ll post daily those videos along with some commentary on how I scout roadless high country in the West.
While the goal is to lay eyes on a dandy buck, I also know that learning the the logistics (access, camp, water), finding likely buck country, and looking for big tracks can improve my odds of killing a big mule deer come season.
The horses are shod, the gear is in the truck with the trailer in tow, and my heart is racing a bit as I head for the high and lonesome in search of a good buck. Come along and see how I personally scout.
