While I love the high country, over the years I’ve found that some of the best bucks live in the lower elevation aspen/conifer zone of the West. High country certainly can hold some great bucks, but it can’t handle much hunting pressure due to the open terrain. Combine that with the ability of more rifleman to shoot long-range, the quality of bucks in the high country across the West seems to be declining.
The problem with the aspen/conifer zone is that it’s more challenging to find bucks there. With all the species of brush growing at this elevation, it can be very tough to actually lay eyes on a buck compared to open terrain. You’ll be sure that the big buck you saw while scouting is gone but I’d offer that he’s likely still in the area and just harder to locate. The only solution is to keep at it, day after day…
