thought I would update this thread; I ended up scoring a pair of Gold Ring 10x42's (searching Craigslist, eBay, hunting and bird forums).

got them for significantly less than my $750-ish budget which should make the "boss" happy

hoping they are as good as all the reviews I've poured over

The Tract Torics are in the range and have a growing following. I ordered a set of the 10x42s awhile back and they have been backordered, but got an email today that they are back in stock and mine are on their way. Here is that Outdoor Life bino review article that gives them good marks.
