I have one and it puts out an impressive amount of light for a red lamp. That said, I probably wouldn't use it as my main headlamp. It's nice in group settings so it doesn't blind the people you are with, and I often use it for hiking in to a glassing point in the dark so I don't disturb nearby animals (no idea if it really helps or not but I guess it gives the confidence factor like camo clothing does). I plan to attempt some night photography at some point and will also use it for that. Other than the specific uses I've mentioned above, I don't particularly care for a red lamp. Your eyes adjust a little after some time behind the light but it's still odd to me to have everything in red. Doing camp chores, reading, etc. I just don't care for the red as much as a standard beam.
For what you are needing I think you are better off with a light that has both options, especially for a use like international travel where weight isn't as much of a concern as backpacking. Zebralights are fantastic but they don't offer anything with red and white lights. If she doesn't need both there are some great Zebralight options. Otherwise I'd look at some of the options Fenix has, or maybe a Black Diamond Spot or Storm. The Huntbackcountry podcast did a headlamp review a while back but it was limited to AAA battery lamps (not my preferred choice). They had good results with the Coast headlamps as well.
