Youth Rifle Options

Hello everyone,
I’m looking for a good quality hunting rifle for my son to grow into. What’s everyone experiences? I really haven’t found too much out there. There’s a mossburg that has a bunch of stock spacers. I like the spacers, just not particularly the rifle. The best one I’ve found is the sig cross.
My old man would roll over in his grave if he knew I spent $1700 on a bare rifle lol. I’m not too big on the idea either.

Bought my son a Tikka compact in 7-08 this summer. He took his buck with it this fall. He loves it and it has stock spacers he can grow into. He’s got his eye on a AG composite stock for when he’s done growing tho.

Following, I’m in the market as well. I had been looking at the savage compact.

Compact or ranch rifles are smaller size.
Get the kid a rifle and caliber a kid can easily shoot.

I just ordered the Mossberg bantom .243 for my soon to be 10 year old daughter. I’m not a fan really of the Mossberg, but it was the shortest lop I could find in a youth rifle.

Once she’s a little longer, im sure we’ll jump her into a tikka compact.

AR in 6.5 or .308? The adjustable buttstock would allow pretty much anyone to shoot it properly and no issues of growing in to it or out growing it. Semi-auto would tame recoil a bit as well.

My wife got the Mossberg Bantam in 6.5 CM, and she loves it. I made her handle every gun under the sun, and that's the one she chose for best feel when shouldered and working the bolt. I even tried pushing her into the Weatherby Camilla, but she said the Mossberg felt better. She only shoots to verify her zero but she hits the center dot at 100 and rings steel with consistency at 300.
I really like the feel of it as well. You can tell the bolt is a cheaper 2 lug but it is very smooth and fast to handle.

Most savage 110’s come with spacers and all sorts of stuff. Boyds makes an At One stock that has all sorts of adjustments. I bought a savage 11 and put it in a boyds stock when my son was 10. He is almost 16 now and still uses it. Its been a great set up. I

My son has been shooting his Ruger American compact in 6.5 CM since he was 8 (he’s almost 10 now). Not something that can grow with him, but I figure when he’s ready for a bigger rifle, it will probably be time to step up in caliber too.

My boy is 8. He’s tall for his age. He’s been shooting an ar for a few years. It nice that the lop can be shortened for him.
I don’t think I’d give him anything bigger then a 6.5 for awhile. I was contemplating letting him hunt, depending on how he can handle a little bit larger caliber.

I've set up guns for my 3 daughters. Each had a different idea about what they wanted in their gun. My suggestions and what I wanted for them didn't matter as much as what their preference was. I had better success making them part of the decision. They shot better, were more interested in hunting and never said they didn't like their gun.

I did choose the caliber and changed the triggers to be as crisp and light as I felt comfortable.

The Tikka T3X lite compact is a full size Tikka with a 12 1/2 inch lop and comes with spacers to adjust lop over time-growth. And, it has the same after market support of the T3 and T3X.

Following, I’m in the market as well. I had been looking at the savage compact.

I think you are making a good choice, but you might want to look to the Savage Hunter XP. It has an adjustable LOP which can keep your child in a correctly sized rifle longer.

My daughter is going to learn to shoot a center fire rifle this spring and it will be on my ( soon to be her) Savage High Country. Why? I already have one. With the AccuStock, I can shrink LOP and/or comb height to fit her as she grows.
