I’m confused how it works. I applied for elk, antelope and deer preference points in 2018. In 2019 I just applied for elk and was unsuccessful do I then apply for preference point only during that period. I assumed I would of gotten a preference point when I applied for drawing. Also can I just apply for the antelope and deer preference point even though I didn’t apply for the hunt. Wasn’t sure you could after first year. Thanks for any info.

I’m not sure about your first question but yes you can just buy the points in September

i wasn’t sure if if I should have gotten a preference point or not. They didn’t charge me for one so I was wondering if I screwed up somehow. Thanks for the reply

I have yet to apply to Wyoming other than points so that’s why I can’t answer it, but regardless if you did mess up you definitely can get your points in September though

You can buy preference point only for each species July 1-October 31 each year.

If you apply for a tag and you are not successful on your 1st choice you should receive a preference point for the next year. I would give them a call to verify your status and answer any questions you have. They’ve always been very helpful when I’ve called.

Regs changed this year I believe. Now even if unsuccessful in the draw you still must go and purchase a preference point during the summer months when preference points may be purchased. I’m sure this will screw a few people over.

I believe Lif is correct. The preference point and draw system are now independent.

One thing that just hit me as I have not had luck in the draw yet. If you do draw a tag can you still apply for a point that same year? Seems the answer would be yes to that which is contrary to other states. Anyone have experience with that? Going to have to read up a bit.

Yes this is the first year that they are separate. I think it is going to screw a lot of people (or help a lot of people depending on how you look at it) who think that because they were unsuccessful, they should be getting a point. Now, unless you are successful in the draw, you will have to buy all points in the summer months. Just set reminders so you dont forget.

Wyoming seems to be in the midst of changing quite a bit these days.

You had to physically check the "with pref point option" in years past. That option is now gone.
No, if you draw you can not buy a point.
