Hello friends. I am looking for ANY suggestions for archery hunting in WY. I have never been hunting there and I am looking for a new area to hunt. I have hunted MT and CO but looking at WY this time being my "sweet spot" in MT has nose dived. If anyone has any input on WY please help. I welcome PM's if you would rather respond that way. Thanks!

First off welcome to Rokslide! Great forum here for sure.

It's not that they don't want to help, but that's a pretty open ended question... For example, I could say "You should hunt the SE part of WY". But that may not help you very much because I don't know if you're after deer, elk, antelope, cougars, wolves, bear, moose, goat (see where this is going?)...etc

Also people are a bit more hesitant to help a guy with a very low post count and no introduction. Also it seems as though you haven't done any research on Wyoming yourself. My advice is to start looking into harvest stats for the state and species your looking at, then start studying how the draw system works or if the units your interested in are OTC. Once you do a bit of research and narrow down your area to a few units, I'm sure guys will be much more inclined to give you a few tips.

I myself haven't ever hunted WY so I can't help. Best of luck to you and again welcome!

Mike

Welcome! What are you interested in hunting? I will say from experience I had to change my elk, deer, and antelope areas due to changes with the regs/quotas.

Point made. I am new to this site and mainly looking for elk hunting. I am looking for myself and my 13 yr old son. My wife his mother passed away 12/24/09 and financially that has limited our number of trips out there. I am limited to south west corner due to regulations of WY wilderness areas to NR's. I have looked into Coke mountain area/grays river but totally lost to archery hunting pressure in the area and elk numbers. I do not have much faith in FWP statistics other than the draw stats. I would prefer to get my own feet in there to scout but financially I can't afford that anymore. I make it out west to elk hunting as much as I can which is about every 4-5 yrs now my best hunting buddy is old enough now to go with me(my son). I used to love MT hunting but this last season stunk for us and looking for a new spot/state. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since you are saying limiting to SW I am guessing you are coming from Utah? I am in SE wyoming and bowhunting can be rough but it doable. I have gone to NW part of the state last year and going back this year. Some ok general areas but you have to work to get away from people. When you do that you work hard and you end up in the carnivore section pretty quick. (something to think about with your son).

The southwest is just like the north. In order to get away from the people/pressure you will need to work for it. Archery elk is going to be full of people unless you go a few miles in. Southwest has some general but it's hard hunted.

Yes thanks Crumy! Sorry I am actually from MI. I do think and worry about my son in those carnivorous areas. It is not a problem if just me....if it is my time then it is my time. That's the way I look at it. With my son I would sleep with one eye open but not like it would make a difference. Like I said if its your time its your time. The way I look at it, a grizzly bear compared to when he turns 16 and gets his driving license is a cake walk! Ha ha! Anyone here needs help with MT I will help how I can send me a pm.

2 things I see: First, make sure your son has his hunter safety certificate. Second, there are "cheaper" fees for the kids on some hunts that you might want to look at. The Wyoming residents can fill you in on that. Might want to look at buying preference points when you can, they should be available in July? The preference points may give you some options that wouldn't otherwise be available. I would consider antelope and left-over cow tags also. I have a hunt for my soon to be 15 year old lined up on a cow tag. He is over the top about the hunt. Kids want to hunt, just give them a chance. Good luck.

elkflunky I pm'd you and yes your son can get a youth license for a cheaper price than the nonresident adult tag. Non resident youth is $275 as of 6/7/13 according to the WY G&F website.
