Looking to purchase a stove capable of heating a 12X20 Alaknak tent with 4 guys in in. I like the 4 dogs but am open to whatever anyone is selling. Located in northern Illinois but I dont mind driving to pickup if it's a reasonable distance from me.

ChubbyChaser,

I have been running a hunter model Cylinder Stove in my 12X12 Alaknak. What is your application going to require? In my opinion you would be better off with a larger model. The 3-dog or 4 dog stove (with a baffle) would be a better fit especially in the coldest weather, say late rifle in the Rockies or any winter camping in Illinois. Are you in need of a light weight stove? I just upgraded with a purchased of a Titanium DX-2 from Donald at 4-dog stoves. It only weighs 14lbs complete with 4" pipe and side shelf. Pricey but very well made. Have never seen the steel models that are much less expensive. I'm told the quality of these models are outstanding. Depending on the quality of the wood, you will get longer burn times. Best of luck with your research!

It will be used for two primary trips annually. One trip to GMU 161 Colorado for 3rd rifle season (elk) with 4 hunters total, and several trips to central Wisconsin for the firearm and late bow seasons. I've bowhunted GMU 161 in September and stayed in a camper. Temps were between 30-70 degrees at basecamp but i'm sure the continental divide where we hunt is much much colder. The plan for this 2018 elk hunt is to drive the trucks and setup on top of the divide with the intent to work east deep into 161 and return in the evenings for rest. I'm anticipating the temps near Hans Peak at this time of the year will drop into the single digits with the potential of snow so we definitely want something that's capable of heating a 12x20 foot tent. Since we are driving the trucks up there i dont need anything light weight but want to stay away from cast iron potbelly type stoves that weight over 100 lbs. The tent weights 120 so id like a stove thats under 70-80lbs. 4 dogs is what i was thinking, i have absolutely no experience with them so I value your input, greatly appreciated.

LMAO, funny you mention that, i have a mig welder in my garage and have been thinking about doing that, laziness prevailed haha, i guess i should probably give that a try.

If you can find a Sotz barrel stove kit, they are far superior to the cast Vogelzang kits. Put a piece of expanded metal on top for a cooking surface and rock on.....

I have a sweet Dutch oven for our tent that I will surely fire up come November.

We use a schrader papa bear when we can just unload it out of the trailer, cast iron and 20 inch wood you won't get cold. Also have a lightweight stove for packing in but uses more wood and someone gets to sleep near the wood pile and the stove
