Winchester model 70 280AI build has begun!

My father passed away December 2012. He left me a small amount of money and he told me he wanted me to do something special for ME since I seem to never do that. He didn't want it used to pay bills or anything else. I think my dad would be tickled I chose to build myself a custom rifle. The one and only I will ever have in my lifetime, and I'm excited to be able to later pass it along to my son or one of his children.

I have been looking for a used Winchester Model 70 Classic in 30-06 or something so I could barrel it in a 280 Remington or a 280AI. Well I found one that was used but looks like it has barely been used! No scratches or dings, cosmoline in the action still, and the bolt face has no wear what-so-ever. It is really pristine. A lot nicer of a donor than I needed, but who's to complain. I won't have to replace or refinish the stock. It's chambered in a .270 Winchester and will soon be made into a real rifle!! I got it for $640.00 so I don't think I did too bad.

I'm going to have a stainless 24" barrel in the same contour as the factory barrel installed, 1-9 twist. The stock will be pillar and glass bedded. The gunsmith is going to true the action, lugs, bolt face, the whole bit, and work his magic on the trigger to bring it to about 3 pounds. The action, bolt, and bottom metal are all going to be coated in a satin black color that is some serious tough stuff.

I was having butterflies when I started this as it's just hard for me to do something like that for myself, but now I'm starting to get pretty excited!! It will take four or five months for all of this to be completed. Waiting on the barrel will take the most time. While that is happening, I'm looking for a scope. Here's where I want your assistance. Help me out with a new scope for my rifle.

I am a fixed power nut and ALL OF MY PERSONAL RIFLES have fixed 6x or 4x Leupold scopes on them. I love the 6x42 and was thinking that scope with a custom reticle to match the ballistics of my load would be great, but I also have been thinking about a variable if you can believe it. I think I have it narrowed down to three choices that I really am pulled towards.

Zeiss Conquest: My son has a 4.5-14-44mm Zeiss with the Z600 reticle on his 300 WSM. Man I like that scope. Thinking that one would be pretty sweet on this rifle for my intended use which is hunting, shooting coyotes, and some longer distance target shooting.

Leupold VX3- My son has a 4.5-14x40mm Leupold with the B&C reticle on his 6mm Remington. Also really like that set-up of the crosshairs. It is simple and quick and works very very well. I am a die-hard Leupold fan also. In my opinion they build a great product and they stand behind their products.

Leica: Leica ER 3.5-14x42mm with the ballistic plex reticle. Man that's a great looking scope also and the glass is first rate. I don't think it would disappoint me one tiny little bit.

So give me a little bump towards one of those three. I really don't think I could go wrong with any of them.

David

PS- The barrel will be pulled off of this rifle here very soon. I would like to see it go to one of you guys who would use and appreciate it. As stated it's a standard contour 24" barrel in 270 Winchester. I honestly don't think that the rifle had many if any rounds beyond the factory proof tests down the tube. I would make someone on here a very very good deal on this barrel. Maybe your WINCHESTER .270 has a lot of rounds down it and doesn't shoot quite as well as it used to, or maybe this would be great for the build you were going to do. I'd like to see it get used. Again I will make someone a very good deal on this. PM me if you are interested!!

Nice work man, that rifle is beautiful and your plans seem solid. Camofire has had that Ziess on recently from time to time, if you could get a deal on that I think it would be a great scope.

I think you could be happy with any of those scopes. I too have a winny, 280AI, mines built on a pre 64 action, mcm edge stock and a pac-nor fwt barrel it's one of my favorite rilfes. I think you have a great plan.

Hey David,

those are great scope choices.

Leica reticles are super thin. Keep that in mind.

i think you should also look at:

Meopta Meostar riflescopes (they even have a 6X42 fixed ;) ).

Swarovski Z3. The 3-10X42 with the BRH or 4a reticle would make a good looking match.

i can't wait to see how it turns out!

Thanks for the comments guys! BB I too have heard good things about Meopta and they actually make the glass for a lot of the higher end European scope makers. Is that true?
