Hello, I recently moved to Arizona. I currently live in the city of surprise. Does anyone know of any good quail hunting spots near surprise? Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

The Az fish and game website is your best bet. Select the units your interested in near you and in the species overview they give general info on locations etc.

From what I have found it’s pretty tough anywhere near the city. Small coveys and generally you gotta work to find them. I have done really well some days but it’s taken me quite a while to dial in the spots that produce.

Your almost better off just driving the few hours to the known quail areas and making a day out of it.

The quail down there are the most running birds I have ever seen, if you don’t have good dogs then you might have to try some different tactics on them.

I am in southern NM, but I bet our quail here aren’t much different than they are there. What I have found here is that the “good spots” vary from year to year. That’s not to say that there aren’t some areas that will always be better than others. The main thing is to find out what type of terrain and vegetation they seem to thrive in and go try it out. Quail are very dependent on weather. For instance I spent half the season thinking that we just didn’t have a lot of birds until I found where they were this year. We had several hail storms that I believe took a toll on our bird numbers, but when I found those areas that the hail missed I ended up doing really well. Hope this helps.
