That was a Brown Bear hunt out of Bethel in 2011.
Saw 2 Bear in 10 days.
Both were on a mission, walking to somewhere?
Never stopped, couldnt catch em.
Never fired a shot.
Cool hunt though.

I need to get another brown locking tag. Going to hunt black bears, but if the opportunity presents itself I like having the option.

I’m assuming your doing a guided hunt?
How much more does it cost for a brown bear hunt vs black bear? Or does the guide not charge extra for the brown bear?

Or you doing the second degree kin thing?

I'm a resident. I would not pay the price of a non-resident brown tag ($1000) for just in case. But, I'll gladly make the $25 donation to save the trouble of reporting a DLP shooting and getting to keep the hide and skull after doing the work of getting it out.

As for guides, I have never been able to justify the cost.

What unit are you hunting that requires a fee for a brown bear tag? I should check that out. I’m a resident too but have never paid for a brown bear tag.

A few units and subsistence hunts don’t require a locking tag. But it’s very few and most of the time you can’t remove the trophy from that unit. Some will require the salvage of meat. 25 bucks isn’t much to ask.

15 and 7. Maybe 6. I'm not aware of units that do not require a locking tag for browns, but at $25 I have not been motivated to look either. Muskox also requires a resident to have a locking tag, but no other animal does to my knowledge.

I have lived in Alaska twice. Barrow, Sitka, Anchorage and Fairbanks. Other than when I lived in 26A, there is not a reason not to have a locking tag for a bear hunt.

Yet to kill one, but the drama of killing one to keep it from eating you and then having to deal with the BS with the State to keep the pelt is worth $25 all day long.

Will have to see what breakup looks like this year. I like hunting the Chulitna river just south of the park. No locking tag required and you are allowed two grizz in 16. I camp on the boat up there and have had bears try to come aboard.

Lot of people hunt, camp, fish outside units that need a tag.
I'd argue the units you need a brown bear tag are the units you don't want to do anything in.
