If a horse is carrying it who cares bring the closet. When it goes on my back I don't take much. One base layer, two pairs of socks one pair of pants (worn in), whatever shirt I hike in with, a puffy, a rain jacket. I do take two beanies because I slept in one. Oh and one pair of merino boxers. That gets me through ten days. But like I said with horses who cares, I'd have fresh socks every day...

When I've done horseback hunts, I find that three pairs of socks is plenty. If you have the luxury, take an extra pair of long johns, top and bottom.

Is this a wall tent hunt? If so, I like to take a pair of camp slippers for lounging in the evening.

One question I have always had for the 10+ day hunts, are you washing your clothing somehow? Not sure how to fight the sweaty smell etc. after so many days wearing the same clothing. I know just stay down wind but thought I would see if anyone is somehow "defunking".

What he said ^^^

You are probably limited to two pack boxes at most. Light weight and compressibility, just like for backpacking works well for horses trips. For me, extra socks and long underwear are luxury items and worth the extra weight if a horse is doing all the work. For a 10 day hunt, I would take 3 pairs of socks to wear plus another set reserved for sleeping. Three or four pairs of underwear. I always have crocs regardless if horse or backpack hunt. I would beef up my layering system and also have an extra set of pants. If running merino, you could get by with less under layers. My stone sheep hunt this year went from very hot to pretty darn cold during the hunt. I would rethink the raingear...B.C. can get iffy weather that late. With raingear you will always be packing it with you so less weight in the pack you have to carry up the mountain is something to consider. I ran the Kuiu Yukon jacket as my windbreak/hard shell with a superdown puffy jacket; these go in my pack regardless. It worked well and was a lightweight system. I also believe in using windbreaker vests when cool and hiking/glassing. It works for me and is better than carrying a softshell jacket on top of everything else.

What are you hunting? Moose? Goats? Sheep?

Depending on whether you have flights to camp, ride in's and other factors, your weight might be limted. I would almost guarantee that you will have some snow, cold, possible rain at that time. I wouldn't get carried away with socks and undies as much as I would want good boots and layers and rain gear. Based on my experience with an early October moose hunt in northern BC, it can get cold and snow, but you can get some nice weather also. Talk to the outfitter for recommendations and look at other outfitter websites in the same area for equipment recommendations. If you get two pack boxes, fill one with beer and other goodies and one with necessities.

You can wash stuff. I've taken a sponge bath when the weather is warm. If it's cold, I just don't bother.

I filled my 10L water storage bag and set it near the stove to take the chill off the water and then poured my cooking stove pot full of water from it and boiled it. I then poured the hot water back in and used it to take a very limited shower after four days. I get dandruff if I don't use some dandruff shampoo. The iching will drive me crazy if i don't. I stripped and dampened my hair and washcloth and lathered up. It was about 35º so I worked quickly. I had a sliver of a 3d soap bar and a tiny hotel bottle of shampoo.Rinsed my hair and body with the warm water and then dashed to my woodstove heated tent. It wasn't bad and the clean feeling was really nice. I could have gotten four or five showers with the soap and shampoo I had. I haven't weighed the kit but I bet it is less than 3 ounces total with the micro camp washcloth. I had the the 10L msr for water storage anyway. The merino clothes are amazing for odor resistance. They get a slight musty wet animal smell but it doesn't grow overwhelming in days of wearing.
I will be getting all merino for base layers and shirts and pants. I would have no problem with wearing the same merino for 10 days in cold weather. I had synthetic pants and shirts over my merino base layers and had a merino sweater by Icebreaker this year and was very happy with my wool but not so much with my synthetics. Next year I'm going with First Lite pants and sweater over my merino base layers and shirt. I'll need a super light wind stop shirt to go with it but the range of comfort of the wool is amazing.A warm puffy layer like the First Lite stuff and I'm good to go.

Exactly! You have a horse carrying it for you so take everything you think you might need.

BTW - I have the packable rain suede cabelas jacket and pants in an XL. If the size is right pm me, I would consider parting with them. They have been in the field on two 14 day hunts. I picked up the Kryptek raingear this year so I wont be needing the rain suede.

I've only been on one longer horseback hunt like that during that time of year, and it rained for a couple of hours every day (about 35-40 deg and raining) but was sunny and windy the rest of the time. It was nice to have an extra pair of merino underwear, socks, and shirt to change into every 2-3 days when returning to base/horse camp from bivy hunting. Washing & drying these merino base layers required nothing more than hanging them out on a 550 cord clothesline in the rain & wind. Also, my primary pair of boots ended up getting wet and it was a life saver that I had thrown in my extra/backup pair of boots in my designated pack space (much more important than the cot that the horses had packed for me, but I'm not going to bad mouth the cot either). :)

If you can hang on, I'll have a complete clothing review for a 12-day backcountry horseback hunt done in real time coming up on the Rok Blog
