What would have chewed my truck wiring in Colorado?

Parked my car at a campsite we set up in a national forest next to a wilderness area we were going to hunt for a week. At the end of the week one of the guys truck wouldn't start so I offered to give him a jumpstart. Drove over to his truck, pulled out the jumper cables, opened my hood and...a momma mouse had made a nest on top of my carburetor some time during the week and gave birth to about six little ones. They were so cute...and then I spent an hour checking all of the wires in and around my engine. Lucky for me nothing was chewed on. I guess she wanted someplace dry and warm for her nest.

I had some pack rats or something chew a wire in my truck in Colorado this September and I had an engine knock and my AC was out for the whole drive back to Texas with two stinking dudes who just spent 9 days in the backcountry. **** Those things.

Wow. Thanks for all the replies. Seems I'm not alone. Really ticked me off and has me worried about what else could go wrong with the truck.

lol, something else to worry about, getting stuck at a trailhead far away from civilization, when I'm ready to get home....when I'm done hunting, I'm burnt and just want to get home

Last year a packrat took up residence in my truck one night when we stayed at the family cabin. It tore insulation off the firewall and started building a nest in the engine. When I opened the hood since my dogs were going nuts it moved back to the spare tire and the trucks frame near the spare. I couldn't get it out and ended up parking my truck about 50 yards from the house for a couple days until I finally caught it in a trap. In the meantime one of my dogs tore the wiring out for one of my fog lights trying to get the rat. The soft spot in my heart for those critters has gone cold and hard!

one of my stories- we had camped a couple of days in SE MT and a day after we had returned I took my truck to go grocery shopping and it was running like crap- hmmmmm; took it out to the interstate to open it up thinking it might help- couldn't get the truck up to even 60 mph WTF?

took it home and popped the hood- what's all this dry grass and crap packed in near the battery? and there's rodent turds in it- a pack rat had made the 100 mile trip back with me; found a frayed wire that lead to the throttle bottle (one of two)- repaired the wire, truck again ran like a champ :D

it's really common for vehicles left at trailheads; you'll see folks with hoods left open with the hopes that will deter them- it might work????

We got into my buddies vehicle after a 4 day bwca trip to find the bag of seeds we left on the passenger seat chewed up and a few seeds on the seat. Damn thing chewed open the corner just like you would normally open them.

Found a picture of the mice in their nest under my hood...

Ive had a marmot crawl in my engine while truck camping in the local Sierra here and he just wouldn't get out of there. My hunting partner and I ended up eating him.

Pack rats would be my guess. If you see trucks parked with their hoods up you should do the same.
