So best off the rack rifle that needs no mods? Has most/all of the features that you would be happy with? Not tikka lite, ctr obviously?

I am trying to understand the value prop of DIY semi custom vs full custom vs off the rack that is GTG. NULA looks great, Proof MTR as well.

Is it mostly weight sub 6lb and new caliber that drives this

Do not get me wrong, I shoot sporting clays and have had custom stocks made and custom chokes made because that was the soundest decision at the time. But now I can buy that config off the rack, 5 years ago, not.

Bergara B14 Wilderness if you're good with a medium contour barrel. If weight matters, a B14 Hunter.

Consider a Winchester,

Purchased a Win model 70 Featherweight in .308 Win last June for my grandson's graduation gift. Rifle was made in Portugal, and we are presently surprised with the quality, fit and finish. Trigger pull is just over 3# and the barrel is free-floated. This reasonably priced rifle (out of the box) groups (decently) 3 deferent loads and bullet weights with the same 100 yard zero. This too was a surprise because they are 3 deferent bullets/weights. The Federal Premium 165 AccuBond group was best with the 150 gr. deer season being only slightly less tight. I found (on this site) a used Leopold VX-3 2.5X8X36 with the BDC recital. Together, its a fine rig as the scope seams to be a good fit for the intended purpose. Also it just looks like it belongs on this rifle. PS: I like wood. My Grandson's is the standard walnut/blue Featherweight. Check one out in the stunning stainless/maple stock configuration. Wow!

Have also heard good things about the Bergara B14 and the Sauer Model 101.

My $0.02...these days for hunting a box stock ruger American or savage axis combo with a crap scope will shoot minute of deer for $500. Around $1000 plus glass puts you well into sub Moa territory with tikka, berGarda and others , which is going to be far better than most can ever shoot. Above that there are performance and weight savings to be had for sure but they are less utility to most shooters in the field.

last night in a gun shop I walked past a rack of $500 savage axis guns to fondle a $1000 tikka anD a $1500 sako finnlight and a $2500 carbon light and they no doubt feel nicer, the more you spend, but the more expensive gun isn’t going to make me a better shooter.
