My, brother recently told me a story that I would relate and get see what u guys think? The town cop came in to the butcher shop to get some beef fat to grind with his deer meat and began telling how his archery season went, where he said he stuck four deer and killed two others. Your only allowed to kill one, but what bothers me more is how nonchalant he was about wounding the other four. I know everyone makes a bad shot here and there and sometimes you don't recover a animal. I personal get a sick feeling when I don't recover a animal and it is not something I would brag about. I am just getting into archery hunting so is not recovering a animal something you just have to accept? Or should this guy not be hunting?, which is how i feel.

Pretty simple.. 99% of bowhunters will lose game. Most of us are smart enough not to talk about it.

I am also pretty new to this but can tell you that the percentage of bow hunter should that lose game is probably closer to 100%. Until cabelas develops a heat seeking death ray broadhead that is going to be the case.

Everyone misses shots but Being a sloppy hunter is nothing to brag about.

I don't use a bow. I use a muzzleloader. My dad was pretty strict teaching me and my brother to still hunt. One thing he knocked into both of us was to always take an accurate double lung shot. The lessons stuck with me and i've been lucky to never lose an animal. but i'm really picky before taking a shot. I pass up a lot of shots

With that said. If I did shoot an animal and lose it. My hunt would be over. The guy you're talking about is the worse kind of hunter who makes us all look bad. Cop or no cop. I would have said something to the idiot.

profession is irrelavant infact some of the best hunters I know are police officers. Many work evening and night shifts and have day time hours to go out and chase game.....

that said it's easy to cast judgement on the internet but none of us really know this guys circumstance. at face value yea it sucks but it's ignorant to think we would have performed at a higher level in a hypothetical-to-us situation.

I had a buddy go on his 1st ever archery elk hunt a few years back with OTC tags in CO. He came back empty handed but was excited to go again the following year. He drew blood 4 times that 1st hunt and never recovered an animal. It was easy for me to cast judgement but at the end of the day I can only control what I do and he has to live with those consequences.... truth is that summer he was more diligent about his fitness, shooting, etc.... than maybe even myself so how can I be upset at a situation I wasn't in....

You could have told him to be more careful with the shots he took. You can be the best shot in the world and still lose the animal by taking chanchy shots.

Gonna have to agree on this one and can't think up a situation that would counter act the claim. Shit does happen to everyone. But shit happening over and over to the same person in a short period of time has one common factor. A lost animal is a cause to regroup and self reflect on your role in the situation and what you can do better to avoid it in the future.

doesn't much matter as up to 6 animals maybe dead and the original 2 questions were a) should the op accept the fact that he'll lose animals as a bowhunter and b) should this person not be hunting.

as far as the first question I've been bowhunting for 25 years and have been unsuccessful in recovering 2 out of dozens of animals. Both were inside of 20 yds shots and I was arguably at the top of my game both times in terms of fluency with my bow. The 1st I to this day don't know what happened. I thought I was right in the boiler room but never found him. The other I simply pulled my shot. It sucks, it happens and you move on.... so to answer that questions I would say hope for the best and prepare for the worst meaning: no one ever goes into a day of bowhunting expecting to cripple an animal. Hope you never do but expect to at some point in your BH'ng career.

as far as question #2 there's just too many variables we don't know. Plain and simple.... Like I said it's easy to say that guy shouldn't be hunting but it's not our call, especially only catching the story 4th or 5th hand....

Sadly not legal in many states, due to the thin line of hunting with the use of a dog VS finding downed game.

If I say my elk hunt. I mean the season. Although he did say hunt. So, it could have meant one day, but as you said. It doesn't matter. One day, or the whole season.

What about the point that he said he killed two deer (besides the 4 wounded) and only one is allowed? If I'm reading that post right this guy is bragging about poaching, not just being sloppy. Also ya I've lost a couple bucks with my bow. It sucks and always stays with you.

My brother heard the story first hand from the guy, as for his profession being mentioned I felt it was relevant because as a police officer he should be a role model for the community, and I think bragging about game violations shows something to his character. This was just archery deer.
