First time elk hunter so I would like to know. Who calls during late season? Most bugling is done during archery season. Cow elk calls work? thanks

I don't call during any season, but if I did i'd be less likely to use one that late in the year. Are you hunting for bull, or cow?

I can honestly say that I have never heard an elk make any calling sounds during the 3rd rifle season. Now, if the elk were never pressured at all.....they could very well be making some noise on their own, or even respond to calls. But after all the pressure of the archery, ML, and 1st and 2nd rifle seasons.......they're pretty quiet by then from my experience........sometimes even completely nocturnal.

I've heard big groups of elk talking in the dark and at first light during 3 and 4th seasons (including lots of bugling). However, I only used their noise to guide me and have never tried to call anything in. I do keep a cow call handy if I'm going in for a stalk, you can use it to try and stop an elk for a shot.

I used a cow call to stop the lone bull in the group of about 50 head of elk after getting busted by some of the cows. He was a young bull and I don't think he knew what they were running from. He stopped broadside at 100 yrds, gave me just enough time to take him. All the cows kept running. So you might be able to get them to stop for a quick moment, but I wouldn't count on being able to call them in or anything.

The mature bulls after the rut will be off by themselves resting, and trying to get some weight back on for winter. The only call they'll come into is a dinner bell. ;)
