So my wife drew a 621 bull tag this year and im doing everything to make it an enjoyable and successful hunt. I went scouting this weekend and i dont know if im happy or sad about the results. Shes not looking for some book bull and frankly the first mature 5 point she finds will do. Its all about the experience at this point, and although she has taken cows, she has never taken a bull.
We went out for the weekend and sat each night and glassed up elk. And every night i didn't have to look hard or long to find elk. I was just amazed at how many bulls i could find. I spent the last hour of light behind the glass for two nights in two different locations that i had picked from google earth. I found 11 bulls and only 2 cows and 1 calf. One of the bulls was a small spike/forky and one was a rag horn. But the other nine were average 5's to good sized fives and one 6. 5 or 6 would have probably fit the bill.
So in that regard the hunt it self is looking great and i cant wait to get her out there. But the cow/bull numbers were just way out of wackand not what i expected. Is this normal for you guys this time of year? I know that the bulls will form bachelor groups and not be with cows but I still would have thought i would see cows around in the draws and meadows.
Here is a picture i took of a small rag and two decent 5's.
