My dad had an unfortunate event with his home and he lost everything he owned. It’s been a process dealing with insurance but he’s finally getting his stuff replaced.

That being said he only has a few days left to replace what he owned before the insurance stops paying full price to replace. He called me today and wanted to go replace a few of his guns so I rearranged my schedule and met him at a big gun store close to his house. He ended up with a new Smith and Wesson .38/.357 revolver that is a nice looking gun. He really wanted a Winchester model X or super X (can’t remember which one) that he had for years and years. That particular gun had a mod barrel. Even looking online I couldn’t seem to turn one up. Anywho, I told him to look at all the semis and just narrow down how they feel, shoulder, etc. It was between the browning maxus 2 black gold or a Benelli Montrefello on sale fore $1350. I would have picked the Benelli but he really liked the browning. He said it just shoulder and felt better.

We left and he sent me home with the gun to assemble for him. He has one hand and a prosthetic hook so I obliged and was eager to get on it. I spent a good hour cleaning all of the packing oil off the gun, pulled it all the way apart cleaning each little piece while saving the barrel for last. Upon initial inspection I noticed the welds on the ring that goes around the mag tube were subpar. One in which was not good in the slightest.

Didn’t think much of it but was kinda disappointed and kept cleaning on. Last part of the process was running a bore snake down the tube. After 3 goes I naturally looked down the barrel expecting to see a bright shiny new barrel but found two small blemishes in the barrel.

Further inspection and measuring with the weighted string on the bore snake showed that these small marks were right where the ring is located. So, with a hope and a prayer, I ran a swab down the barrel with quality bore cleaner multiple times. And each time I pulled the swab back I could feel the swab going over the blemishes. When I looked down the barrel I could see a few fibers clinging where the marks are. Obviously, this is a no go.

So frustrating and disheartening. This is by far the most expensive gun my dad has ever bought for himself. In fact, it’s been so long since he’s bought guns he was shocked at the price of “cheap” guns. And he just never seems to catch a break. Heck, he offered to buy me a gun if I wanted one but I passed. Told him he has spent enough money on me in my life and I don’t need anything. I did look at a set of EELL 20/28 over and unders for $12k. I still think the Cesar timpeo shoulders and feels better overall. And no way would I ever ask that man to contribute to guns of the expense.

My plan is to call the gun store first thing in the morning and get this handled. I really don’t even want to tell my dad and hope they will let me resolve the issue without him even knowing. And I sure don’t want my dad to wait on a barrel to be sent to browning for warranty. I think I’ll be real upset if they don’t just swap this barrel for another barrel they have on a new gun and let them deal with the warranty issue.

What a bummer. I’ve never had and issue with a browning product. My Winchester sx4 (basically a cousin to the maxus) has been flawless.
Best of luck getting this resolved.

Oh and BTW, shoot that gun dripping wet with break free CLP...........like soak the magazine tube, action, gas block, everything.

Mine actually have a bit of a "clp mist" with the first few shots of every hunt. They love the stuff and it makes them super easy to wipe down at the end of a shoot.
