I'm in the market for a new 30-06, and the Weatherby Vanguard Backcountry has caught my eye. I'm a big fan of the Vanguard that I own, and the Backcountry seems to fix the biggest issue I have with the Vanguard line - the weight. It's 6.75 lbs, which for me seems like the ideal weight for a 30-06.

There aren't a ton of formal writeups on the Backcountry from the gun mags or big gun websites, and of the handful I've found, two express disappointment with the accuracy. While it's tempting to blame that on the light weight of the rifle, it's really not that lightweight. Its only lightweight compared to a normal Vanguard. Meanwhile, owners on the different hunting and shooting forums tend to say good things. So I'm not sure what the deal is.

Are there any Vanguard Backcountry owners here who have feedback to share? If so, I really appreciate it!

I had two.

Had being the keyword.

I couldn’t muster more than 1.5” groups out of them. They seemed nice, but for the money you can do better... and that experience pretty much turned me off of Vanguards. I know every manufacturer makes a dud here and there, but two? Eh, I’ll pass.

I just can’t get used to the weatherby stock, but if you have a vanguard already and it works for you, I’d go for it. Pretty appealing package imo.

I had two 300 wby Vanguards, the older one shot 3/4 average with factory 180 gr. Partitions, the second one was an Series 2 and shot 3/8 to 1/2 with the factory 165 gr. TSX. and the same with 168 gr. TTSX handloads. The only reason I sold them is I am tired of heavy recoil and I dont like muzzle breaks, and my 3006 does just fine.
