Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie NF District's Travel Plan Notable

Take your blood pressure meds first.

These are areas my family has used for years and years and now they will be essentially closed year around. Wells Creek Rd. is already closed November through March or April already for the large herd of mountain goats that winter there, not that you could get up there anyway then. Don't forget the Mt. Baker Ski Area a couple of miles away has the world's record for snowfall in one year. Most of these high places aren't accessed until well into July anyway, which means these areas are effectively closed year around now.

The local tribes have already used their attorneys to work their way into co-managing the Nooksack Elk Herd due to a judges interpretation of treaties made 140 years or so ago, something that is causing wildlife managers and farmers much more trouble as I have learned first hand. There seems to be no end to these 'sovereign tribes' 'special rights'. They already have incredible big game seasons much different and longer than 'regular people' and while if I ever draw a tag for goat, moose or big horn, for instance, which is likely to never happen, I'll only be able to shoot one in a lifetime in this state. Tribal members can go buy a tag over the counter. I talked to one member who did that for goat last year and shot a nice billy a few days later...easy as that. They already can have casinos, etc. on their land that aren't legal in the rest of the state, etc. Now, they have attorneys working very hard for them to exploit every possible 'right' they can. The effect, however, is creating more and more ill will against them as they are not seemingly functioning as 'members of a community' but exploiting everything they can and reducing opportunity and access for the rest of us that live here too. It feels like the rest of us are the ones being discriminated against.

My favorite is seeing them run a net behind 2 jet sleds and then just cutting out the eggs and throwing the fish on the ground....

I heard a rumor in Oregon they made them choose between their tax exemptions and off reservation hunting/fishing rights. Is that true and how do we make that happen here. Perfect example happening right now. They stated the fish counts were so bad that there shouldn't be a salmon season, yet there's nets strung all over the place on the skokomish river.....

Managing those road systems that way is essentially giving the tribes more land. Land that was not agreed to in treaties.

The US Representative in the area affected is Suzan Delbene:

Email Me | Congresswoman Suzan DelBene

Also, US Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray can be emailed at:

Cantwell: Access Denied

Murray: Access Denied

Links still work even though all they say is Access Denied.

If this gains precedence here or elsewhere, and folks don't fight back, you can expect the issue to be at your own front door at some point. Write an email. Call.

Same thing has been going on here in Alaska for decades!!

I am disgusted whenever I hear "subsistence"!!! If it exists, it should be by traditional means!! No modern implements!! No rifles, no motored vehicles, outboard motors, etc!!!!!!!!
The so called traditional whaling is a joke here!! Most is wasted and they do it because they can!! And then we bad mouth the Japanese for killing whales that they don't waste!!

It is only going to get worse when the Bitch gets elected/appointed!!
She is bought and paid for by the minorities, just like our Governor, Congressman and Senator here in Alaska

Watch out for the next disaster in Alaska, "Indian Land"

It will be Congressman Don Young's Legacy!!!

I am not educated at all on what is going on in the southern Washington Cascades, but winter closures to snowmobilers in certain "wildlife wintering" areas of the forest is pretty routine in many areas...are you saying they are closing this off to snowshoeing and cross country skiing also?

I thought the Native Americans managed their own big game herds and tag allocations on the reservations completely without any control from Fish & Wildlife, and the tribe has no control off of the reservation? Has this changed or is not true?

Closing all access to everyone may have some management benefit. But I fail to see how closing access on public land to all but .000001% of the population can be legal.

In the current condition that this country is in, it does not have to be legal, only Politically Correct!!!!!!

Terminal fisheries are managed a little differently. Also they could have cut way back on the number of days nets can be in the water. You can call the tribal natural resource office and get their net schedule for the year.

Also saying The fish runs are bad is across exaggeration at best. It like saying Everything is on fire. Different times runs in and between species...

Not trying to be rude, just advocating for more thought put into comments is all.

And just to be clear, I am fully opposed to the current road management plan put for the Northern Cascades. I lived in Glacier WA for 10 years and enjoyed using those roads for access. I am not supporting differential treatment

So, I skimmed the above document, and I see what you guys are talking about. It does seem to be ridiculous that a public road is closed to motorized vehicles in the summer to the public in order to "protect the road and reduce maintenance costs", while tribal members are still able to drive on the road. And the ranger also can decide to limit all wheeled vehicles as well (I assume this means bicycles?) for this purpose.

Additionally, if the road is not maintained to a "safe" level for motor vehicles due to finances, then why can't everyone hike or bicycle their ass the last 2-3 miles up the road. What treaty says that Native Americans must be the laziest of all of us lazy Americans and drive a vehicle where others can't. This sounds like dishonest P.C. administrative overreach to me from the parts that I read.

This road closing is nothing new here in north Idaho. When I first moved here in 1998 I gould go, I should say
drive almost any national forest road now almost all roads are marked as a designated rout meaning those roads
are the only one's you're allowed to drive on.
