My new area has winds that make planning a hunt virtually impossible. When they should be going down they are up and vice Versa. When they seem to be doing what they should be they suddenly change and swish up and down, or back and forth. Sometimes for only a few seconds sometimes for a couple of minutes before back the other way.

I’ve given up on trying to plan to go x direction when the thermals should be in my favor and just started going where I want and working it as I can. Is this the way?

Do you guys still try to call downwind if it’s the only option? No matter how much I use my wind indicator I can’t figure out just how far my scent may be traveling in these conditions. Is there a good chance it’s just mixing, and then rising and going the direction is theoretically should?

I’ll be curious to see what more experienced guys have to say but they area that I hunt is this way. I’ve started the last Several years I just go at them and sometimes the wind holds and sometimes it doesn’t. But I very seldom have a predictable wind in the area I hunt. 60% of the time it works every time 😂😂

Where I hunt in Montana the wind is constantly changing and difficult to hunt. Several times I can spend hours getting in position only to find the wind is wrong again when I get there. I'm used to winds swirling and switching in bowls and saddles in the mountains here in Pa. Having milkweed with you really helps see truly what the winds and thermals are doing because you can watch it ride the wind for a long way. I've had elk smell me from over 300 yards away, so if you can't get the wind in your favor best go back to camp in my opinion.
