Vortex Ranger Question

I've got a question for all the Vortex Ranger 1000 owners. While out shooting my bow this morning I was doing some shooting at a fairly steep downhill angle, my ranger was telling me a horizontal compensated distance of 50 yards. I hold dead for 50 and stack 3 arrows in a 3 inch group 6 inches high of the vitals on my block target. I did this twice and thought I'd hold for 40, same group but 6 inches low now.

My question is, how accurate do you find your ranger 1000 to be? Have you guys noticed your rangefinder to be off a few yards? So far I have not been really impressed with mine. While out bear hunting last fall I was having a hard time ranging anything through a real light fog while my buddy had a leupold that was ranging just fine.

where on the target were you taking your measurements from. Sometimes from black to white it can change 5 yards. Also are you in HCD mode?

I was ranging the black, I'll try ranging it one the white and see what it reads then. A buddy of mine might come over to shoot later this evening and I'll see if he'll bring his leupold and we'll both range and compare. That's interesting that it'll read different from black to white. Yes I have it in HCD mode.

I used my ranger 1000 at the total archery challenge back in May, I held dead on what the ranger read for distance on the various 3D targets at ranges from 20-120 yards and never experienced a problem with yardage being off. Only thing I have noticed is a 2-3 yard +\- difference between the ranger and a Leupold. Which in an ASA shoot could be substantial but for general ranging it hasn't been an issue. I did the actual test myself with several friends some shooting hunting setups and others target setups.

I've continued to have problems with my ranger 1000 this week. From basically 12-30 yards it would only give a range of 22 yards. I tried it on multiple targets and it still would only range 22 yards. On flat ground past 30 yards it did fine. I went into sportsmans warehouse yesterday and was asking them if they'd had anyone else with this problem but hadn't heard of it. They did break out the ranger and leupold 1200 tbr and had me try and range a few mounts inside. For whatever reason the ranger wouldn't pick up black bear mounts while the leupold didn't have a problem. I ended up buy the leupold today after havin lost confidence in the vortex. I'm sure I could send it in and vortex would take care of the issue but I didn't want it to happen again in the middle of a hunt.

The Sig was definitely on my radar, mainly after reading your review on it, and I almost did buy it. I am going to play with the leupold for a while and if I end up not being happy with it I'll sell it and pick up the Sig.
