I had an awesome experience while on a work trip through Oregon. We had a stop in Astoria, and I was driving the coast with friends when we saw a small herd of elk passing through Seaside. We pulled over and I set up about 100 yards away from them.

I’ll be damned if I didn’t start taking shots, and one of the spikes looked right at me and came right over to me. I ended up nose to nose with him and frankly, was a little reluctant to move with how close he got to me. Must’ve been curiosity with how young he was. I ended up slowly backing away and the herd went about their meandering.

Someone else who pulled over got a few shots of me sitting still while the little guy was checking me out. I’ll add them in a second reply to this thread.

Forgot to add… the copyright is my Instagram photography page, @precisionshot_photography. I’m no expert but try to post my best wildlife and outdoor work on there when I have time.

The elk are thick up in Astoria. They will sometimes even go out on the beach and play in the ocean. If you stay at the Ft. Stevens campground, you're bound to see elk around somewhere. They have problems with them on the golf course all the time too.

This is also a great time of year to visit Jewell Meadows which is about a half hour southeast. There's roughly 300+ elk hanging in the fields with some quality bulls. They have the life unless they leave that area as general rifle is about to kick off.
