I've been a lurker on here for a couple years, but this is my first post so I'll give a brief introduction with my post. I'm a pretty hardcore whitetail hunter from Southern IL. I am also an avid archer, traveling all over the country to compete in 3d archery tournaments. I have a wife and a 5 month old baby and I am 34 years old.

After months of searching Colorado units and changing my mind numerous times, I'm real close on selecting unit 71 for a mule deer archery hunt. Having never hunted in the west, I am certain this will be a rigorous hunt, but can anybody tell me what to expect as far as mule deer numbers. There will be two of us, and we would like to get into some deer. Quality is not as important as quantity, but is there enough deer out there for us to get into some most days on a 6-7 day archery hunt the first week of season? Another thing, we will backpack in each morning. We are plenty willing to walk 2-3 miles (or more if that is what it takes) each morning before we start, but we have no intentions of camping anywhere other than a road. I just don't think it would be wise for us to backcountry camp on our first western hunt.

If anybody wants to talk me out of using my 1 preference point in 71 and has another unit that I'd be happier with, I'm all ears, lol.

Thanks in advance for any input.
