Hey,

I am from New York going to hunt elk in Colorado this year. I have gone in years past and drew for unit 7. I am looking into doing OTC this year was wonder what people thought about Unit 37.I know that the statics says about 5,000 hunters have hit this unit in years past and was curious if people felt like they were running into a lot of other hunters. Looking at the topo maps the terrain looks pretty steep but curious what other hunters thought about the terrain.

Thanks,

Not looking for a honey hole. Just asking the community if they have insight on this unit since i have never been there before. If you don't have insight then don't comment save us all time!

Yes, there are elk.
Yes, there are more than enough hunters.
Yes, the elk movements/location are negativity impacted by the OTC hunters.
Yes, there's still potential to kill a bull, but it could be a race to the elk. The potential is no better than the majority of the mountains.
Alpine to vertical timber.

To be honest, it's the same story as the rest of CO OTC.

The real time savings is doing research before asking for a handout on your first post, Chief.

I hunted it a few years ago. Ran into outfitters and other hunters. That said using my brain I noticed and area everyone was going around and had an amazing 20 minutes of calling that lead to getting drawn but no shot.

Plan a-z is a good have in the notes

I been doing the research and found that it was time to ask for some outside help. Its not a handout but the food stamps you collect are.

You’ve been researching your Colorado
elk hunt but haven’t been able to find info on whether or not OTC units get hit hard by hunters and better yet haven’t looked at a topo map of the area you intend to hunt. Genuinely curious as to what your “research” has consisted of....

Interesting,

I watched with humility as my single mom (with 5 kids) used food stamps to feed us kids when I was in Jr. High/High School. I could see how ashamed she was, even at that age. After a fun-filled trip to the grocery store so everyone could stare at us "poor white kids" we went back to our 3 room house with pots on the floor to catch the rain water that came through the roof.

Anyway, thanks for reference nomadd. Shows what a class act you are.

His research landed him on this lovely site so that he had a means to try and get by with the minimum effort.

I can remember that shame. When it came time to check out I’d wander the front of the store and leave my mom there to bear it alone. Still haunts me.

Good grief.........tough crowd. nomadd2727 - I've only hunted 37 once and it was about 12 years ago, I never went back cuz I hear the beetle kill was really bad. Sorry I can't be more help. Best of luck on your research and hunt.

I debated hunting 37 a few years ago after lots of homework, a few scouting trips and map study. I ultimately ended up hunting the world's largest mesa. Despite Hunter numbers, I found elk and no other hunters. I sure do miss the Western Slope. I was lucky enough to work over there for 18 months.

Old thread. FYI I am in unit 37 now on vacation. With my family and the beetle kill isn't bad. Was thinking about an OTC elk tag for the area myself. I haven't seen any elk this week, but lots of sign and saw a bull moose. Might still consider a tag if possible, maybe next year.

37 is an extremely challenging unit to hunt. Elk and deer have been decimated in the last decade, then throw in the wolf introductions.

I'll give this tip.. the areas that hold elk tend to be impossible to pack out.
