My goal of drawing and hunting unit 39 type 9 in the Big Horns fell to the
wayside when I come to the reality I was not going to catch up. I
had spent the past years doing my research. So this year I applied for
and drew unit 11 type 1. I am doing my research but would really like
to talk with hunters who hunted or know the unit, hopefully through pm's
or phone. I plan on archery hunting 17th through 25th and then if needed
late October or even November with rifle. Trying to catch up a bit on
this last minute change of heart unit. Anyone care to pm me to help me
get a better feel for this unit? Might be able to get down there this summer
but odds are not good. I would appreciate any help.

TC1982 or Bigty 50 you guys still out there. In older threads I read you
guys have hunted this unit and was wondering if you would not mind
pming me on your hunt? Pat

Lots of elk on NF, but if you don't come back till late October or November for rifle the snow could easily have pushed the elk off the mountain by then. Personally and I know everyone can't do this, but I'd go September 17th- October 5th.

There are a few elk in there not as many as previous years since wolves took up residents in the area ;)

Not trying to Hyjack your post. I also got to draw unit 11 this year. And was looking for atleast some starting point, caliber of elk, reactive to calling? Looking for close to same time, September 15 on into first parts of Oct.
Wytx, not sure if you would be willing to pm me as well but any info would be appreciated

11 is thick timber for 80% of the unit. Calling is a must for archery IMO. They talk but you gotta talk back. Glassing is pointless for the most part unless your up high early or down low late... Lots of water. Your best bet a strong calling strategy or wait till the snow down low. Access is easy with good roads. There will be alot of camps. Don't get to discouraged. It's definitely not a cake walk unit even though only a few sections of the unit are steep. There are lots of marshes and lots of moose. Again the timber is thick. Good luck

Want to bump this thread to the top. Couple weeks out and I am
getting pumped. Ready to go and know where I will be starting as
well as back up spots. If anyone out there would be willing to share
info on this unit I would appreciate a pm. Can't get enough if nothing
else just to talk about the unit. At my age this will be my only time in
this unit. Hope to hear from you guys and best of luck on your hunts. Pat

Update on my hunt. Just returned home from unit 11, hunted the 17th through 25th. Went from
warm and windy to rain turning into snow and windy back to warm and windy. Morning hunts
were very dead probably as a result of the full moon. Two days of tracking snow resulted in very
few tracks but we did cut tracks of lone bulls. Little to no response to calls and very few bugles.
Last my son checked we were over 50 miles on foot. We were bound and determined to find elk
or elk that wanted to play. Ironically the biggest bull we seen ( all of 320) was the only bull we had
that bugled to our calls and actually left his cows to come about 50 yards back to us. 3 cows had me
pinned but I had a 40 yard open lane but instead of coming back to these 3 cows he chased 2 others
the opposite direction.
As a result we come home empty handed again as our biggest nightmare came true, silent bulls.
Our inexperience really shows in these conditions, I want to thank everyone for any information
or comments you shared. Pat

Yes Forest I am planning on going back but it is a long ways for me and it
will be very hard to get away. I have not had a elk tag for years and the last
2 hunts now 3 have been empty tags. My wife and I love elk meat and with
the amount of money I spent on this hunt I really wanted to fill my freezer.
Problem is I have never rifle hunted elk and I am concerned about being able
to maintain out there after storms move in. Anyone out there willing to pm
me or maybe we could talk on phone on what I will need and what to expect
hunting the Wick after a big storm? I know it is a long shot but man if I could
have a local that just wanted to be apart of this hunt help me out so maybe I
would not have to haul 4- wheeler back etc that would be a game changer.
