Just wondering if anybody has tried the ulmer edges as an alternative to the rage 40KE's. They have roughly the same cutting diameter, but the edges obviously have the chisel tip vs the cut on contact of the 40KE's. The fact that the edges lock in a deployed position is a bonus. Any women out there shoot them? Any guys with lower poundage bows have any input?

I think it depends on how low of KE are you talking. At a certain point mechanicals are not a good choice as it spends momentum during the deployment process. If in doubt I would shoot a cut on contact for lower KE set ups.

Thats a very good and critical point. My wife pulls 52 pounds at 26 1/2" with a relatively heavy arrow for her set up. The rage 40ke's proved themselves out of her set up on a tank mulie last fall, getting even better penetration than I even expected. I have always been somewhat critical of mechanicals myself until recently. Rear deploying broadheads (specifically rage) have performed very well for me the last 3 years. The ulmer edge broadheads have a design that appears to have some improvements over the rage heads.

We have tried a few fixed broadheads out of her set up, but ultimately her less than perfect form has her arrows flying poorly. She can shoot great groups with field points, but fixed blade heads exaggerate the problem and her groups blow up. We are still working on her form and tuning, but until we exercise those demons, she'll be sticking with the mechanicals.

Hopefully this gives you a better insight into the situation. Also, she has a self imposed limit of 25 yards, so downrange energy is not as much of an issue. (She stalked in and stuck her buck last year at 8 yards.)

Nice job on her buck. 52lbs @ 26 1/2 is a lot of energy. I have my daughter @ 43 and 25" shooting FMJ and montecs and her limit is 20yards.

When customers come into our shop with similar set ups we definitely recommend the use of a good 2 blade cut on contact broadhead. Magnus Stingers are our preferred choice but the Slick Trick Viper Trick is another great COC head. On less than ideal hits the COC is going to be a much better performing head than a mechanical and will out penetrate them as well.

If she is having trouble with fixed heads I would look more at the tune of the bow and also look at the arrow set up itself. If she can group well with field points then she should be able to also with a fixed head.

Thanks for the advice, good to hear from pro shop pros. Her groups go from roughly 4 inches at 30 yards to 7 or 8 with just about any fixed blade broadhead. Her confidence goes out the window with groups that double in size. Unfortunately we're too far into the season to do any major changes, so we're looking for the best option for her to keep going. The rage groups are maybe an inch bigger than field points. Just looking for the best option out there for her for this season.
