TX DIY whitetail public land

My friend and I want to go on a public land hunt either in West Texas or out of Houston or Dallas. Any suggestions?

Too late to put in an application for the TPWD hunts but I think some of the national forest land in southeast Texas is open to walk-in hunting.

Quite a few WMAs and NF lands within a couple hours of the Houston & Dallas areas. You can learn a lot by reading through the TPWD WMA book.

Just moved to Dallas this year. Made it out for turkey season and scored. Probably won't make it out for deer season. The public land around Dallas is heavily pressured from what I can tell. I'd look for a WMA that is at least 2hr away from a major city.

Currently hunting some of the public land South of San Angelo. Its just a few hours from all of the big cities in East Texas and has a ton of deer sign. Haven't done a great job of scouting but there is a ton of sign.
