Did a 5K mud run this morning. Not real long, but worked instead of the normal Saturday workout. Normally I would plan on trashing a pair of old workout shoes, but didn't have anything with any tread. Bought a pair is Asics Fuji Trainer 2 this week to try as they were on sale. Not by any stretch of the imagination saying that they are the best, but damn, the grip was great for the slippery uphills, downhills and the creeks and mudholes. It was spitting rain the whole time and I didn't want to slip on the grass or otherwise. Well worth the money spent. I can see lot of miles on these babies in the future. Don't know what took me so long to learn this. Told my wife that she is getting a pair for the next one. Other recommendations for these type of applications without breaking the bank? Thanks

New Balance minimus 1010v2s are a good, lightweight trail shoe with excellent tread. 4mm drop with a rock plate. Been running these for a few months. I like them better than the regular minimus trail. worth a look.

tstowater...I own just about every trail shoe made through the industry i work in...for what the fuji trainers cost ya, that's pretty average for a good trail shoe. Though the fuji is on the bottom of my 'favorites' list.

Doug, depends on what you're doing with it and your biomechanics (come by the store and try some stuff on). The most popular trail shoe is the Brooks Cascadia -fits a variety of feet very well and has a full outsole (100% ground contact). My fleet in order of preference: Pearl Izumi N1 Trail, Saucony Kinvara Trail2, Montrail Mountain Masochist (have race everything from 10-100 miles in), Montrail Bajada, New Balance 1210/Leadville and on and on. Ever seen a pair of Hoka's?

That's why I asked you, you know the race / shoe game better than anyone I know. I might come visit you at work when I have time.

I found a good sale on the Asics and I have had pretty good luck with their shoes in the past and was the primary reason for buying. I've been wearing Saucony Kinvara's more and get along well with them. I would say that the Asics seem like they would stand up better, but I want to look at some of the other shoes that you mentioned. Thanks,

Lately my feet and legs have been getting beat up from running some trails. Hasn't been a problem through the summer but is becoming one now. My legs and 1 knee get pretty damn stiff, and feet/heels hurt. I'm thinking I have a shoe problem now because it was nonexistent all Summer. I've been using some Asics gel running shoes. Never had an issue with Asics before, and they still work fine on the treadmill. And they aren't that old.

You guys think a trail running shoe could be the cure? Or am I just getting old!
