How detailed Should I go? I've never had a topo map made and I'd like to use it for scouting to help pinpoint springs, bedding areas and such. Is 7.5 min the standard?

The more detailed you go the less area the map will cover on a standard map sheet. I use mytopo.com and create different maps for areas that I plan to hunt. You can order a map with satellite imagery, property bounderies, mil gird etc etc there, and in ratio's from 1:35000(most detail smallest area) out to 1:75000(most area). I like to use a server like GIS mapping to pin point areas of interest, ie possible bedding areas, glassing points etc etc with the GIS, then I transfer anything of interest to my topo maps. To include distances I measured on the GIS. This saves me from having to use a protractor in the field for everything.

This is just how I do it, I'm sure someone else can chime in with a better way. I know some guys create custom overlays for their maps that show property boundaries and such, but i'm not quite that computer saavy lol.
