Tikka Action Threads

I pulled a barrel off one of my Tikkas today and have a couple of threads that got bunged up and need to be chased to clean them up. Tikkas are a 1”-16TPI and I was wondering if anyone has done this and can recommend a company that sells taps. I have found some online suppliers but don’t want to buy a piece of crap tool.

I would try a thread file first. A die will probably undercut the threads and will result in loose tolerances to the action.

Agreed. If you can't get a thread file in there use a thread chaser not a tap/die. Most taps/dies will cut extra material and make it a sloppy mess. There are different classes of taps/dies, so you could get an undersized one, but the ones that are closer to thread chasers aren't commonly stocked, so just get a thread chaser.

Sorry I misread, didn't catch you action threads need cleaned. Just like Sundodger said a thread chaser is you best bet.

Definitely get a tap or chaser designed for gunsmithing from some place like Brownells. Industrial taps come in all sorts of clearances and are likely to over cut the threads.

This! I would attempt to gently clean up the existing threads before trying to cut in new ones.

I’ve done plenty of DIY barrel installs and when the action threads get buggered these days (rare), it’s off to a GOOD smith for correction.

I thought Tikkas used metric threads. I could be wrong but I would make sure I'm using the right thread chaser.

They are1-16 tpi.

1-16 tpi is a non standard thread so there are not many taps available out there and good luck finding a chaser in that dimension.
