monday, my visiting brother and i raced to the KUIU store. for those that have never been, running out the door and telling your wife, you will be there for just an hour is an outright, bold-faced lie! we camped out.

wife and my mom gave up on us and went to lunch. driving home ravenous, we stopped at In and Out burger. effen delicious!

got home, sat on the couch, my brother slipped into a food coma and fell asleep. dragging my gassy, bloated but out the door to jog was some effort. i felt slow, sluggish..stomach kinda gurgly. i did 3 miles and crawled home on the cool down walk.

i rarely eat fast food. when i do, it is ALWAYS because i have no plan for food and i have to find something to eat. i usually am past the point of hunger and i am flat out starving. i have co-workers that eat it all the time. are they food coma-ing? or can a body adapt to fast food?

it is like a hang-over for me. you vow never ever to do it again..but it sucks you in ;) hahhaha.

it was delicious though. not so sure it was worth it.

I don't know if I qualify as a healthy guy, but I also feel like crap after fast food. I hit Subway if I need something.

I try to bring stuff with me whenever I go somewhere. Banana or apple or a power bar to hold me over. If I am having to stop for a full meal I'll usually try and find a local deli or something. If I have no choice to but to eat fast food I'll order a grilled chicken sandwich. I will say I cave and get bacon ultimate cheeseburger every once in awhile ;-)

Any food high in fat and poor nutrition content will make you food coma or feel sluggish. You can literally tell a difference when you're eating right and how you perform vs if you're just eating anything and how you perform. Although after a week in the mountains I love me a buffalo bacon cheeseburger and some sweet potato fries. Puts you right to sleep when you're done!

You know........about two years ago I told myself that I was going to make an eating lifestyle change. I ate nothing but veggies, fruit, and some nuts for two weeks. I'll tell you what.........THAT made me feel like crap. To top it off, I didn't crap for almost 10 days.....got constipated. I never get constipated. That was all I needed for confirmation that my high fat, high protein, high carb diet is GOOD for my body. Never again. Veggies are of the devil.

Mike, what I wouldn't give to have your metabolism!

I hate having to resign myself to the fact that everything that tastes awesome is slowly poisoning me!

This is me too, fast food, especially if it's fried makes me feel sick and tired. Besides, it's not that cheap, particularly considering what you get. Instead I keep a stash of snacks in my car (granola bars, packets of nuts, etc) for times when I am out and about longer than planned and get ravenous. Most days when I don't work, I put an apple or banana in my bag before I leave the house, or a bag of sliced peppers or snap peas with hummus. I pack myself lunch and dinner plus snacks for every shift I work (I work 13 hour days with 2 hours of commuting), and these meals usually are comprised heavily of leftovers.

The hardest time I have is during hunting season or when we are otherwise traveling...there are few good choices when you are on the go for more than a day, especially in some more rural parts of our state. I typically try to avoid overly processed foods, and stuff that contains a lot of articifical ingredients but sometimes when choices are limited it becomes a matter of picking "the lesser evil". Those tuna lunch kits and kraft lunch ables are available at a lot of gas stations, and while not perfect choices they are a lot better than anything fried. If fast food is truly the only thing available, subway and qdoba offer the freshest choices. If it's a place like mcdonalds or Burger King I order an unbreaded grilled chicken sandwich or a cup of chilli. You can often get sides like apple slices off the kids menu instead if fries.

I admit, After a long backpack trip there really is nothing like a burger with fries, and I do indulge that way on occasion. Still would prefer something from a local place over the Golden Arches any day though...

I must be the only one, I can stuff myself with fast food and then go to the gym an hour later. I'm young yet, I'm assuming being able to eat like a pig is not going to last very much longer so I'm taking advantage of it. I'm weaning myself off the fried goods though, too expensive.

Post backpacking trip fast food consumption is a necessity for me!

I'm 33 and can still do it (guess I have never been called mr health nut though and could stand to lose a few lbs) but I always feel like I just threw money away for a horrible tasting meal. I would rather snack till I can eat something good at home. I do really like Firehouse Subs but that isn't a healthy option.

That's why I wanted to try the healthy route for a change.

For me it's a giant chicken fried steak smothered in country gravy.......with hashbrowns, sour dough toast, eggs, and coffee. Or if I'm back home.......Beef Flautas smothered in green chili with rice & beans and sour cream and guac. Now I'm getting hungry and drooling on the keyboard. But I made up an elk meatloaf for dinner tonight. For some reason my girls have never had meatloaf before, let alone elk meatloaf. They're gonna love it.

Don't forget to top it off with your bacon milkshake :)

I have always had an iron gut. My problem is I love burgers (any type of sandwich, really). I do notice quality of burger, though. Carls Jr, In and Out, Whataburger, even Wendy's; the higher quality beef shines compared to McDucks, or Booger King. It seems the bigger the franchise, the worse the food treats me. The bigger they are, the more they have to cut corners to get a profit. I don't eat Subway, if there is a Jimmy Johns. Local Lotaburger instead of McD's. Local taco joint instead of Toxic Hell. I am about to hit 42.

Soup is a good quick option when out and about. Hot, filling and due to the water content it fills you up without being a calorie bomb as much as fast food. Even something high in calories and fat like chowder is a better deal than a burger and fries, you would have to eat an uncomfortable amount to do the same calories. Safeway, Fred Meyers, even lots of gas stations have soup.

While most of what you said is true, it's still worth it for an In and Out Burger every once in a while!
