Hi Guys, for those who have experience with swaro I am looking for a bit of advice.

I currently have an ATS hd 65, but... to be honest I don't see much of an advantage over my 15x slc at distance, 30x ish mag before the image starts to darken.
I have been toying with the idea of upgrading to an 85 atx, at 1910g its nearly 500g heavier than the ATS. but has an exit pupil very close to the slc15's. As the scope separates I suppose the weight is not that critical for a backpack hunt with a partner as the weight can be shared.

So, my real question is what improvement could I expect in the image of the ATX 65 compared to my ATS. I would expect the light gathering to be around the same but will it resolve an improved image at greater magnification?

I cant get to look through tan ATX any time soon.
Thanks.

About the same really in all categories, lmo. The ATX series utilizes Swarovsion glass, but in spite of that fact I don't see much difference between the two series scopes.

Now comparing the 85 to the 65 of either series is a different story. That light gathering at dusk with the larger objectives is a profound difference. If a guy consistently hunts early morning moose, or late evening mule deer etc, the the bigger scopes will make a difference.

Where are you seeing an 85 mm objective? On the Swarovski website they list only 65 and 80 mm objectives.

The ATX/STX/BTX series spotting scopes have 65/85/95mm objective lenses.

Personally I would go big or go home and get the 95mm. Seeing how you are only interested in the 65 or 85 I would get the 85mm. If you end up not liking it, sell it and get the 65mm.

Yup, see it now. I just did not look far enough on the website.

Thanks,

Thanks for that Broomd,

I'll either keep the ats or go up to the 85 atx. The larger exit pupil @25x was what drew me to consider the 85 over the heavier 95.

I'm a fan of the 85mm....beyond exit pupil, here's why: The 85mm is damn near the same as the 95mm in optical quality. I've spent a lot of time behind the two side by side, espeicially in low light. I can tell you that for m eyes it literally comes down to a mere few minutes of usable viewing light with that extra 10mm. And honestly where we're at in ID that's past legal shootnig light anyway.
The 95mm is noticeably larger in overall pack size. That bell shouldn't be much larger but it is. It's a beast in the pack.
Another thing is that the 85 focuses closer than the 95mm. I'd much rather have the 25-60 (85) than the 30-70 (95). There are many times I want a closer focus but I'll almost never use a true 70x power. Get an extender for crazy close.

The last thing is price. The 85mm can be had quite a bit cheaper, especially in the used market.

I've had both together and can speak from experience on this...

Agreed. I have both the 65 and 85. Utilize the 65 in the back country. 85 on day hunts n Nov rut hunts. They both serve a different purpose. I too can not tell the 85-95 apart it’s splitting hairs. Weight n $ savings I’d do the 85 again.
