As I'm researching and learning about suppressors, I'm being told that putting a direct thread suppressor on a sporter weight barrel is kind of a no-no.

Something about a shoulder behind it for alignment. This makes sense plus the steel being thin and not allowing much metal for strength.

Is this true?

I just measured 0.667" with cheapie calipers so I wouldn't trust it to the thousandth but it's close enough to chat about.

Can this barrel be threaded? 7mm Rem Mag 23" barrel. Not a ton of taper. Even at 16" the barrel only measures 0.690

Your diameter is barely more than 5/8 so 1/2 28 threads is what you’ll get. Not a problem with a 1/2 28 direct thread can or a good 5/8 24 thread adapter for a 5/8 24 can. My guy will thread 1/2 down to .600. My 308 Montana was just a hair over that at 18” as I recall. Hasn’t been an issue.

Good rule of thumb is to have .675" to work with so you can thread 5/8" and have a total of 0.050" for a shoulder. Sounds like you could shorten perhaps to 21" or 20" (I didn't do the math) and have it threaded 5/8 or you could have an adapter added. Works either way and I'd wo whatever was simplest and suited me best and wouldn't lose sleep over it.

It was still muzzle diameter at like 20"

I'm calling a Smith tomorrow to talk about it

All these shoulders are awesome but threading 1/2” just isn’t an issue and will be cheaper.
Perhaps. When I asked my local gunsmith about doing it, he would thread my tikka barrel 9/16 and then put an adapter on it. But I wanted the barrel chopped down at the same time, and that doubled the cost locally but not for Kampfeld. And there was a 6 month wait.

I was dollars ahead and it was way quicker for me to send it to Karl. YMMV.
