Well the time came. My trusty (2006?) Casio pathfinder PAW 1300 broke the wrist strap. Replacement parts are not in stock. Last time, the lady said they may never have them in stock again.

Things I loved about the watch:

Solar power- no battery ever.
Atomic time keeping
Easy to see in dim light.

Now I need to find a new watch. What do we love?

I've had a g-shock for almost 10 years. I had to replace the strap one time but that is it. It also has the atomic time keeping and solar power. Some of the newer ones have altimeter, barometer and a compass built in. They look pretty cool and I'd love to get one but the one I have keeps on keepin on. I looked at the garmin and suunto but wasn't real sure about having a watch that needs to be charged. Those options seem like they would be much more appealing if they had the solar power function.

Curious what others have to say.

I like my Casio pathfinder with compass, barometer, altimeter and thermometer. Although I don't really trust any of those readings...the need for constant recalibration seems to be the norm. The solar and atomic functions are great. Same club occasionally has them for about $100.

Casio G shock. On my second one since the late '80's. They are bomber watches and a cherished part of my every day carry. Great piece of kit that offer incredible value for the dollar. Will buy another instantly when my current watch dies. It's going on 13-14 years of hard living...:) It's atomic, solar and has a metal band. Have put in a couple of band pins, but that's it.
Thinking about this thing and there's a lot of sentimental value there, wow. Never would have thunk it...

I've had a good track record with my Suunto Military Core. Got it in 2012 and its been through some serious bang-ups in my former line of work. It has all the features I care for in a watch like that.

My take.....watches are for telling time and your smart phone and gps are for everything else. I have bought and sold many full featured outdoors watches. They are bulky and either hard to see, hard to operate, or questionable accuracy in my opinion. I try to keep it simple. What I want is a rugged waterproof watch with night illumination I can see in my bag at night.
The Luminox are great. My current favorite watch is an LLBean illuminated field watch I bought for $75 on ebay. Must have the square indicators that are tritium, I think Luminox does it for them.

What he said.

The sunnto vector I used to have was fashionable and fit in well at the many local ski area pubs and boutique restaurants BUT it was a total POS . Within a short time it developed moisture inside and the altimeter needed alot of calibration. The compass was not accurate. When I contacted the company about the moisture they wanted a minimum of $50 . I literally threw it in the garbage and the entire time my good ol G-Shock solar was working just fine and has been for over 10 years. I may look into the casio prg 270 if I want to try another multi function watch.

Option One: I would also suggest that you just get another watch strap for it.

OR

Option Two: Call Casio Customer Support and see if one of the bands for the other Pathfinder PAW 1300 series watches will fit yours. I did that when my watchband was wearing out. It was just a different color but it fit.

OR

Option Three: Since they cannot repair it, ask if you can trade it in for whatever the current model is that is close to what you have. I did this too when I upgraded to the titanium model. It cost me the price difference and I had to send them my old one, but I got a new watch at a discount.

If you like watch I would go with option one or option two.

Agreed. The lady I talked to didn't sound optimistic about inventory.

Adventure and watch don't really belong in the same sentence. Just go to the woods and work with the natural flow of things. Relax and enjoy yourself.

Ive used a suunto core for about 2 years, the altimeter needs constant recalibration which is a huge bummer. Guess i should have read some reviews before the purchase, Ive heard the casio pathfinder is better but don't have any first hand experience fwiw
