Nothing is listed anywhere I can find on the interwebs.

Trying to figure out a starting load for staball Hd in a 7wsm

Cross referenced max loads of comparable powders for both the 7RM and the 7 wsm in the hornady and nosler reloading manuals and found that the wsm has about a 4.5% larger charge weight than the 7RM of a given powder.

Would it be "wise" to use a 7RM max charge plus 4.5% then reduce by 10% as a starting charge for staball Hd?

How do other go about determining starting charge weight for a powder not listed for your desired cartridge?

Seems to be about on par with the hillbilly math I did comparing the wsm to the RM.

Thanks for the info

I worked up a pressure test on a 6.5 SAUM started mid charge for a 6.5 PRC and worked from 57 up to 66 grains of power using a 144LRHT. Never hit pressure and at 66 grains velocity was 2989 with a 20” barrel.

Mine is throated long for the Berger 156 EOL, so COAL with this load was 3.113”.

May give you some kind of starting point.

Thanks for the input, I was thinking about starting at 60gr. I'll drop it back a couple more, the 175 has a good bit of bearing surface. I'm also running it in a long action rem 700 so I have it seated with boat tail junction at base of neck and shoulder junction.

Do this for the team. I’m new to staball HD too and hoping it will work in a wsm. Although I just snagged 14lbs of RL26.

Ran one of of each powder charge from 61-71 gr. Found pressure at 72gr on a later trip.
175 berger elite, fed once fired brass, fed lrm primers, seated boat tail at neck/shoulder junction.

Those are impressive speeds if the barrel length “normal” range. What is it?

Btw apologies on my earlier post didn’t realize you were digging into it 6 months ago. Glad you have the data now though.

My RL26 load (20” and similar velocity with 175eldx) is 65g and loaded long 2.98” OAL.

It's a 23" barrel, didn't have time to work up an actual load, but it was right on par with h1000

I'm going to run a ladder to mirror what Ice-kub did and will post my results as well going to be in a 24" barrel on my end CCI magnum primers.

According to the GRT Discord-obtained Staball HD powder profile, and plugging it into a 7mm WSM with a 22" barrel and 175gr EH, I get a charge of about 67.5 grains at 62,846psi, giving 2727fps. 63 grains will put you at 50K psi.

NOTE: I have not used the Staball HD powder profile enough with my 7 PRC to confirm its accuracy, but my confirmed max load of 71.1gr with a 175 ELD-X in my rifle is pretty close to the max pressure indicated on GRT. However, I and getting more velocity than GRT indicates.

Following back up with data from my range trip, ran a test from 65-71 3 shots each with Staball HD and 180 eldms. coal was set at 3.162 and using cci 250 primers. results ended up showing slight cratering at 71gr but not bad.

65gr- 2510,2506,2518
66gr- 2550,2577,2581
67gr- 2604,2631,2584
68gr- 2667,2660,2653
69gr- 2719,2713,2737
70gr- 2786,2776,2790
71gr- 2839,2809,2825

Not the most consistent SD results and speeds seemed low compared to expected but the 180's are a little heavier than what others have tested. Dispersion was remarkably consistent at 200yds. I don't have the target to re measure but i believe all of those shots measured less than an inch and a half for all 21 rounds.

I tested a few loads from my x-bolt 7mm wsm chopped to 20”. Running 160 grain nosler ballistic tips. Worked up from 70 to 72 grains and never hit pressure signs. 72 grains gave me 2770 fps but didn’t group well for me. I settled on 73 grains of ramshot magnum.

After another range trip not sure staball hd is going to be the powder for me. Getting some very high es and sd numbers.
10 shots each, fired 4, 3, 3. with 5 to 10 min for cooling
69gr 2737.2 avg 52.7 es, 17.8 sd.
69.5gr 2765.3 avg 58.9 es, 16.7 sd.
70gr 2813.2 avg 58.7 es, 19.5 sd.

Might try h1000 next to tighten up the spreads.

I've been using it in my 270wsm. I don't seem to have the spreads you're showing. Did you size all the cases (regardless if new) and chamfer the necks (inside and out)? That seems to make quite a difference in my experience.

Topper, I did resize through my redding bushing die and chamfered/debured prior to seating, it is new brass so that could be part of the problem I suppose. Winchester brass so not lapua quality.
