Hello,

Tossing around the idea of going spring turkey hunting in Colorado. The idea is to go turkey hunting where I have been scouting on Google Earth for an archery season Elk hunt for a couple years now.

Is this a good idea?
Waste of time?
Will Elk be in the same area by Fall?
This area have any turkeys? Would like to kill some meat.
Area is Routt National Forest north of Steamboat Springs.

I'd be grateful for any comments and ideas. God Bless!

Thanks.

I spent a couple days there last summer, buffalo pass road looked like good turkey country down low, but with the snowfall we've had and will get, you probably can't get to the country where the elk will be in archery season till after turkey season is my guess. So I'd say it would be a total bust for elk scouting

If you're Turkey hunting it anyway I'd look around for some hidden elky areas. Look for spots most hunters would not most likely venture into. Most Turkey hunters are fairly close to roads so not many areas will be too secret! (grin) Check it out but don't make it your go to area thinking you'll be all alone come elk season!

If you were planning on scouting the high country you won't be able to access it that early unless you are on a snowmobile or skis. The USFS office in Steamboat or Walden could provide you an estimate on when Buffalo Pass road will open. Right now there is a ton of snow in Steamboat and there is a lot of winter remaining.

For a idea of how much snow we've had in southern part of state, Crested Butte ski area had to close for a bit because of too much snow!
