First spring bear hunt this year, hunting public land in the mountains near Butte. Done some scouting, found fresh sign in the fall, and have a couple of areas I want to glass. Elevation I'm thinking about is in the 7,500-8,500ft range.
A few specific questions:
1. Timing - when do bears typically show up in this part of the state?
2. Time of day - morning or evening more productive for spot and stalk in this type of country?
3. The terrain I'm looking at is a mix of dark timber with sage parks and small meadows. Am I better off glassing from above, or getting into the timber and still hunting? Also, what type of things do you look for e-scouting, how can you tell what meadows have good grass to feed on?
4. Any general read on how the green-up is progressing in this part of the state this year?
Appreciate any intel from guys who've hunted this area or similar country.
