I'm heading up to NM unit 34 the week after next for a elk scout/bear hunt/ armed camping trip.

I'll be hunting DIY, no hounds, from the ground with a rifle, I'm curious to know what you guys think about hunting with no dogs concurrent with dog hunters in the unit.

Personally, if it is open to hunting without dogs I say go for it. Hunting a unit without dogs, that is open to hunting with dogs, would not be my first choice. Simply for the reason that bears might have been ran/treed and skittish or run out of the areas accessible. I am not saying I am against hounding at all, love houndsmen, I am just saying humans have a hard time competing with dogs. Still, I say go for it. Best of luck to you man!

Im in NM as well BUT I'll be in 36 doing the same, but with a bow. Any suggestions Saylean? I'm new to Bear hunting.

Read up on bear forums online, check out some bear hunting books (cough) and be patient. Glass areas, early morning, evening. Bears will be moving lots now, looking for food before winter hits. I am not sure what the food sources are in NM...if they have prickly pears, watch those areas.

Predator call! Use two people if possible.....remember, bears are not like yotes, they take time to come in sometimes.

That may be tough hunting. I'm not a fan of hunting with dogs, but I have no complaints where it's legal. Lucky for me it's not in Colorado. I would think the dogs will drive out the bears from the area, except for those using the dogs.

Calling is very effective if done right, but i'm not sure about along side dog hunters. I don't even know what to recommend. Try everything and hope for some luck.

What kind of calls do you suggest?
