Planning a several day backpacking hunt mid September.
Just wondering how to take along cover scent without the weight. Planning on wearing all wool for base layers so that will help. But I'd like to spray down occasionally. Doesn't someone make a powder you can mix up with water?

It's pretty much pointless. If you're not hunting the wind then you're not hunting. Dead Down Wind makes a concentrate that comes in a package like the condiments at a fast food place that you mix with water but you're no fooling the nose of an elk with or without it. This is not eastern whitetail hunting from a stand. You're going to sweat and stink and all the merino does is keep it to where you can stand your own stench.

Yeah Marino is something else. Can sweat in it for a day and it won't take a smell! Never have hunted deer back east....

yeah, hunting into the wind is key. that being said,I have always had a few Hunters Specalties scent wafers pinned to my pack and hat. the wind is fickle in the mountains and most guys i know have been busted more than once by swirling winds.(myself too) I really cant say if they have helped or not,but i figure they cant hurt. I only use the pine or earth scent. the cow elk piss one is powerfull and I hate it,as with it on you wont smell real elk,and being able to smell them is very important!

Takeem406 , the Dead Down Wind product I mentioned is exactly what you described wanting and DDW works the best of any product I've used and I've used it all hunting whitetail local and local deer a very well educated. I hunt the wind here too but use intense scent control to smell "cold" and distant if the wind swirls. There's plenty of houses around so the scent of humans is always in the air so I just need to smell distant like the house 400 yards away through the trees.

Cover scent is exactly what it says it is. A cover. It doesn't work well. I take dry baby wipes and baking soda in a small ziploc, wipe down everyday. Also don't use deodorant!

IMO its pointless.

Elk are not at all use to smelling humans and they will not tolerate it.. Even reduced odor is plenty enough to send them hauling butt.

Yes sir, don't waste your time or money worrying about it, hunt the wind & when not possible reroute or back out completely.
