Took my boy on his first big game hunt this month. He’s 4 and all he does is play hunting, shoot his bow and BB gun around the house. We did 2 4 day trips for spring bear in Idaho. Never spotted a bear but saw lots of elk deer and turkey. We even got to watch a calf take its first steps and feed that was an awesome experience praise Jesus. He became pretty efficient spotting them in his own binoculars by the end of the trip even spotting a couple on his own. He managed a number of 3-5 mile hikes on closed logging roads. He did well. Looking forward to lots of hunts with the little guy.

Awesome man!
I’m planning to take my 3 year old on his first squirrel hunt this year. When did you start your little guy with a BB gun?

Perfect. He will remember trips like that forever, Both my boys were born when I was working in ID. They literally learned how to walk in Hells Canyon and the N Fk of the Clearwater. Oldest graduated yesterday. I think that if you wait to take the kids until they are of hunting age, it’s too late. Literally raise them hiking, hunting, looking for sheds, getting wood, picking mushrooms and huckleberries, anything in the woods.

I started my boy at 3 on a BB gun. I took a red Ryder and cut off the stock so it would fit him being able to reach the trigger with it properly shoulder. He’s getting a new one soon that I’ll have to cut down just a little more. They’re throw away guns so I don’t mind cutting them down.

Great idea cutting down the stock. I’m planning on picking up a red ryder this summer to drill home gun safety and have him start plinking with me.
