A couple seasons on my tipi now and pulling it out for a backpack hunt in Mt this season it smelled like smoke something terrible.

Last year we did a drop moose hunt with it and the stove but the swampy ground and wet wood did a number on it. I wiped it down last year with soapy water ( Dawn dish soap) and it appears it did nothing to help.

I contacted the outfit i bought the fabric from RSBTR, not much help but they recommended i test my proposed white vinegar solution. I tested 50% vinegar.... no problems with my 1.6oz PU 4,000 tipi, pictured.

I then soaked the tent in a 25% white vinegar and water solution whth a little dish soap for about 1/2 hr agitating a little. Affer drying the smoke smell was maybe 10% of what it had been. i was short on vinegar otherwise i wiuld have upped the %.

Has anyone had success with ridding the smoke smell 100%?

Btw, soft pine boughs with the dry straw type grass over it made the soaking wet muddy ground the best floor ever. We had rain/ sleet/snow on the backpack in- zero dry ground spots.... but no problem with that floor.

google diy skunk odor removal recipe or some such search term.

Its like 1:2 baking soda to hydrogen peroxide, and a couple table spoons dawn dish liquid.

something close to that.

The nostalgic odor of past campfires is a smell I enjoy when digging out gear each fall. Are you sure you want to clean it up? I wish they could bottle it and sell it for an air freshener. The shape of a little cardboard campfire hanging from an elastic string on the rearview? That would beat most of the crap they have now.

I've had smoke odors get attached to various fabrics and found them almost impossible to fully remove. Somehow those molecules must be bonding to the fabrics and not letting go. The only thing that has ever worked for me is a combination of time, air and sunlight. There might be commercial products out there which remove smoke odors (think about the service and remediation companies which clean up after fires) but I'm simply not aware.

After some web research I can find no one-and-done product or method to remove the smoke odor. Various combos of white vinegar, soaps, sodas, borax and such are recommended but in the end it always seems to come down to time and ventilation. This makes me wonder whether repeated trips through a warm clothes dryer would be as effective (and less work) versus all the effort of washing, cleaning or treating garments or shelters affected by smoke.

From what I read it is not good for coated fabrics....I was afraid to try it.

I think a guy is going to have a hard time beating a mild soap and 50% White Vinegar solution. After 3 days now my tent has only a small % of smoky smell that it had.

I didn't add the baking soda as it neutralizes the vinegar...and its an abrasive. Might work....I dunno.
