Camofire has a great deal on 90% jacket and I need all new stuff.
I am a east cost, white tail hunting, but will be going out west for elk soon enough.
What do you guys think , is the 90% jacket a good piece in the system? Looking for that outer wind resistant layer that can be worn alone if warmer but with bunch of layers if cold.
Is it pretty much just a shell? Also at camofire I suppose they are new older stuff any issues with older 90%?

My 90% jacket and pants is my go to clothing on my archery elk hunts. Have had them for 6 years now. I can layer up to where I also use those pieces during the early season for eastern whitetail hunting. I also have the Ascent Jacket and pants for warmer weather.

so the 90% jacket seems like a good bet....anyone notice a difference on the new ones vs the old ones?

Ok and is the Ascent jacket wind proof?

I have an older 90%. It has the DWR finish but isn't "waterproof". Also mine DOES NOT stop the wind, even a small breeze. I rarely use it anymore. Maybe the newer ones are different? Mine is about 6 years old.

i just picked one up. I was able to tested in the latest wind storm with gust up to 50+mph. I could feel the cold, @ 20, but could not feel the wind cut through the fabric. I fell very good about this jacket for early season whitetail.

The 90% would be a decent early season jacket. But I've found (as others have said) it really isn't very wind resistant. Other dislikes for me are that it has no hood and is cut fairly tight so layering underneath is not easy, particularly in the arm area.

It's not a shell. It's a decent mid layer. I sold mine because the wind blocking claims are highly exaggerated.

BTW Stillwater Fly Shop also has some even better close out prices... boy the reviews are all over the place guess that happens with each company and each piece. Going to give it a try at these prices , $159

So what would you guys consider a true wind proof shell and then a true water proof rain suit? (again i am thinking a layer)

i have a 90% jacket. i wont even begin to guess how long i've had it. it is old. it has huge gaping armpit vents.

i love the jacket. i wear it as an outer layer in clear weather. i handle the cold by layer beneath it. that jacket has pushed thru some thick plant life and i bet i cant find a tear or pulled fabric.

yes it is light..it is just like any soft shell you could buy at REI really. i am wearing it less and less simply because it is XL and i dieted down to L.

Sounds like the 90 percent version I have, love the pit zips. I have a Jetstream lite vest I add for wind protection, and a Kelvin lite hoody I sub when I need a little more warmth. I can still wear the 90 over the hoody for outer layer. I can go from shirt sleeve weather to blowing snow and still be very comfortable with the combo.
