Ok so today i took my freshly finished 270 out for a few shots.
I am admittedly not a great gun guy, i have a few and plink real well but longer ranges i have not had much time with.
so i bore-sighted the thing and went up to the hills, i have no rest/sled so i had my daypack on the hood of truck and gave'r.
my first go was 4 shots at 100y with about 7-10 left to right breeze. i feel i did ok since just bore-sighted. then i moved to 200y for 2 shots same conditions, and level was fine but both hit 3-4" right. what am i doing wrong?
Also how much time do you all give the barrel between shots? i was around 5-6min a shot

4 around center where at 100y and the two to the right (one barely hit) where at 200y

thanks any help is great as most all my time is spent with bow in hand, but branching out for more possibilities.

Go back and shoot some more when the wind is calm. Also what is the rifle and scope combo? Did you make sure that all of the mount and ring screws are properly torqued?

thanks justin for the response.
I feel that the 100 is good for how little i shoot but the 200 had me confused.
I will go shoot some more.

it is a weatherby vangaurd 270 with a timney trigger and a vortex diamondback 4x12x40 and i torqued to spec.
And the i am shooting federal fusion 150

Sounds like you should be good with your setup. Keep shooting and maybe try a couple more loads to see if your groups improve.

Mate, you need to at least fire a group, which is 3 or more shots.

Your first group appears pretty well on poa, however only firing 2 shots at the second set doesn't allow you to determine the centre of the group. Quiet possibly the third shot could have well landed at the same elevation on paper as your other 2 but left of the square (your poa) which would tell you your poi at 200 is pretty good, albeit a tad high. It could have also landed left and low, which would then put the centre of your group pretty well on poa. Make sense?

In a nutshell, you need to fire at least 3 shots and then determine the centre of the extreme spread to get the poa, and then if need be, adjust your scope. Looks like you are pretty close though.

thanks guys i will put some more time in and see what happens.

as far as the groups of three goes i get it but how much if any time are you waiting between shots?

Trying to shoot nice groups without a good repeatable rest is tough. Also, go prone if you can instead of off the hood if you are forced to use the backpack.

Definitely do that ^

It is illegal to shoot off your hood in Washington for one thing.

I will shoot a three to five shot group and then let the barrel cool a bit. I don't wait between shots in a group though.

is i illegal even off the road? i thought it was only illegal if you truck was on a road?

Just crank your shots off one after the other mate, you want to move as little as possible while shooting each group. Test and adjust after reloading and squeeze the trigger. Lying supported should see you pretty well right.
