After 7 days of TOUGH conditions, I was finally able to shoot a bull over a wallow. Plenty of elk where we hunted, just barely anything talking at all. Sign was easy to find, but it seemed the hot weather kept us from actually seeing elk. Couple of bugles early each day, then dead all day after. Decided to find as many active wallows as possible, and sit the best ones each afternoon. After getting busted several times, we finally found the right setup. I set up on a ridge watching a mountain trail leading down and my buddy Jeff got downwind of the wallow and watched the park. Unknown to both of us, two bulls came in at the same time. I shot my bull first, while Jeff watched a 6pt working across the park. I cow called loudly after my 30 yard shot. As my bull ran off, the other bull bugled at it. We came close to scoring a double but the 6pt wouldnt commit the full distance before shooting light ran out. After a tricky tracking job, we found my weirdo 4x3. Still tastes good!! Amazingly, we were able to get the bull out in ONE trip! 1.2 mile uphill pack out. We loaded down the packs and trudged our way out!! First time ive been able to get one out in one trip! No heavy cape and head to carry really helps. :)

Congrats man! Sounds well earned. Hoping to be bringing some elk meat back to NC in a few weeks after helping my Dad with his tag

Congrats, I've got a shed in my keeper pile thats almost identical as that left side

Is it just a goofy spike or was it an older elk? Kind of looks like an over achieving spike to me but cant judge body size in the pics.

Pretty cool looking antlers.

Really big body size. But, im not great at judging age of elk. He had all the characteristics of an older bull, but a crazy set of antlers. I would say at least 3-4 years old minimum due to body size.

Congrats bud, way to go!

Thanks! Seems as tho you took my buddy Joe H on a hunt during the same time. Him an Jerry are tight! He said Jerry was stoked about his bull.

Nice job Kenny.
I was getting updates [John] of your and Jeff's hunt via my InReach

Thanks Brad! I heard CO was a little slow on the bugle action for you as well. GOod thing Jeff has the InReach, since he donated his phone to the mountains! LOL

The ivories and teeth should do a good job showing age. If the ivories are small, pointy, hollow and pretty much white he's a yearling

Ivories were very Yellow, medium sized id say. Definitely not as large as some other bulls ive killed. No pointy, very rounded.
